About Max
Max Wallace used boxing as a way to handle the loss of his daughter and it led to him having a career in the sport and starting his own business
Max has suffered tragic losses in his life but he hasn't let them take him off track.
Many people go through several jobs and careers before they find their true calling, but for Max Wallace, it was a devastating tragedy that led to him finding his passion. The devoted father from West London even worked four jobs at once to provide for his family at one point, doing everything from construction and security work to selling his own art work to make ends meet.
It was the death of his first daughter from meningitis when he was 21 that set him down a path that would lead to a professional boxing career and now, him launching his own business helping others to use the sport to improve their physical and mental health. He told MyLondon He said: "I was in a very low state. I needed to do something to take my mind off it, something to concentrate on. I put my energy into it and went back to my gym to start again."
In boxing, he found a discipline and determination that saw him ranked just outside the top 20 fighters in the UK, in a professional career that spanned from 1987 to 1990 and only 10 fights. It has also turned into a career outside of the ring, with him becoming a boxing and kickboxing trainer, after going through a multitude of other jobs.
Max said: "I've worked in security, sold my art, construction, worked in a community centre, boxed professionally as well as represented a high-class laundry company. I've done a lot. I've always been a firm believer in the idea that the more you put into something, the better you'll become and that is what I believe - I did that with boxing and my community work."
When he was five, his family moved to Barnes in West London at a time when it was not ethnically diverse. He remembers one experience he encountered when trying to walk to the local park. "I grew up in Wandsworth and moved to Barnes when I was five. It was a big culture shock as Barnes wasn't very culturally mixed. I remember I looked out the window and saw a park. I remember thinking 'wow'. I left the front gate, turned left, walked down to do another left and I felt something burning the back of me. I turned around and there were around four people on the road staring at me with their mouths open.
"I guess they couldn't believe a Black kid was walking around on his own," he laughs. "In the 70s around there, it wasn't very mixed. I'm pretty sure we were the first, if not, only Black family at the school."
In the 2000s, Max got a job at a community centre teaching kickboxing and then an opportunity came up to be Facilities Manager. He would go on to work at this job for 16 years and loved it. Giving back to the community is an important component of Max's life and the community centre was the perfect place for him to do it, but then he lost the job he adored.
"When I first arrived at the community centre I had the respect of the young and old. There were people from all different backgrounds and all walks of life that would come together there."
During his time at the community centre, Max helped teach people kickboxing, organised community events and also helped at Grenfell. When the fire happened in 2017, Max raced down to the area. He helped give out parcels and supplies to those impacted, showing how important helping out is to him.
He has worked in Hammersmith and Fulham for over 20 years and the community centre was where most of his work was done. In 2019, he was fired from his job and didn't know what was next.
He said: "I remember feeling really low when I got fired. I knew people were depending on me and losing that job hurt. It was all I had to know for 16 years so I didn't know what I was going to do.
Max now teaches people how to live healthily with sport and diet
"Being unemployed at my age felt horrible. Losing my job at my age, in this environment when a young Black guy struggles to get a job, less a 50-year-old black guy who only knows the community - who's going to employ me and give me time?
It was this worry that led Max to seek out help. He found the Startup School for Seniors Run by Suzanne Noble and Mark Elliot, they help people aged 50 and over with the tools to start their own business. According to the latest Office for National Statistics labour market data, there are now 550,000 fewer people aged over 50 who are in work than before the pandemic began - the most significant fall over two years since the early 90s.
Max set up Health Defence to improve people's physical and mental health through boxing and kickboxing
Suzanne said: "Covid has changed the employment market irreversibly and made it even harder for workers aged 50-plus to find a job. We want to give older people a platform through which they can take back control by launching a business of their own. When people think of start-ups, they tend to picture high-growth tech businesses launched by 20-somethings wearing Converse, but in reality, the decision for many people to set up their own company is increasingly driven by necessity and putting food on the table."
Max added: "Suzanne and Mark were a godsend. I always tell them that. I'm just saying it but they really helped me and I have no idea how to pay them back - I don't believe they know what they've done for me. They gave me my life and confidence back".
Max set up his own business, Health Defence CIC in March 2020. Health Defence aims to get the community healthy by offering non-contact boxing classes, massages, counselling and a wellbeing room. The aim is to combat ill-health in the community and has hopes to open a micro wellbeing centre in Hammersmith.

Max is an outstanding trainer. Through his wealth of experience in the ring and training all levels he is able to tailor his coaching programmes to every student. For myself, I needed to improve on foundational boxing techniques and Max knew exactly what to focus on and how to get the best out of me. I improved hugely over 2 years and enjoyed every session with Max. I would recommend Max to anyone - whether fine tuning advanced boxing techniques or someone wanting solid structure to a fitness regime.
I have worked with Max on a personal one to one pad session basis (boxing) and have found that his years of amateur and professional experience coupled with his charming, honest and warm personality makes him the perfect coach. He is inspiring and full of positivity and I had an amazing session with him, he broke down boxing combinations for me in such a way that he has made me fall back in love with the sport, after a long time out of it. I highly recommend booking sessions with him, I’ll be revisiting Max myself very soon.
