About Ed
Hi! I'm Ed and it is my passion to help students to enjoy and engage with all kinds of literature. I achieved a double first class degree with distinction in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic from the University of Cambridge. During this time, I studied an array of languages ranging all the way from Old Norse and Anglo-Norman to Medieval Cornish and Old English. This focus on engaging in foreign literature in its origin language has ensured that my approach to writing and teaching literature essays revolves around close linguistic detail, using linguistic analysis to supplement wide-ranging thematic analysis. I am currently studying an MPhil in English at the University of Oxford with a full scholarship.
It is my ambition to inspire students to experience the same joy that I have enjoyed from studying English literature, and I look to gain as much experience as possible before fulfilling my goal of teaching in the future.

My approach to tutoring is tailored to each student, identifying individual requirements and interests with which we can progress. I prioritise engaging with students' existing interests and cultivating new areas of interest so that students can enjoy their subject even when faced with academic challenges, a skill that is invaluable going forwards into further education.
When teaching English literature, I favour a discussion-based approach in order to challenge students to think about their material in different and abstract ways, paying close attention to the social and historical context of the literature we encounter.
With regard to the language element, I cultivate close attention to linguistic detail both in creative writing and literary analysis.
This blend of critical thinking and linguistic detail serves to help each student to create exceptional and perceptive essays.
I can either teach 30-minute lessons or hour-long lessons depending on the requirements of the student, from KS3 up to A level. I also offer tuition in Latin up to GCSE, and can offer tuition in Old Norse, Old English, and Middle English for students with additional interests.
