About James

Really, I just want to talk about maths and help people understand. The earliest photo of me that I can remember is one of me holding up a page of numbers. I was naturally gifted at maths. I learned to solve like a machine; but I loathed it. When I was 15, I was invited to a summer camp for International Mathematical Olympiad scouting, and my eyes were opened. Professors taught casually. There was open discussion and laughter. There was no shame in being unable to solve a question. It was there that I realised Maths isn't about the questions and answers. It's about the curiosity to understand. Maths doesn't have to be boring. Since then, I led the Maths tutor group at my school and have graduated from Cambridge in Maths with a first class degree, specialising in Pure Maths.

About the lesson

Maths is a way of looking at the world - no two people have the same perspective. We can all understand maths in our own way; it's my job to help you find it. I teach maths levels ranging from basic arithmetic, to GCSEs and A-Levels. I can also help with any extracurricular maths, such as Maths Olympiad practice and STEP/MAT preparation. I'll use the first lesson to see how you respond to different kinds of teaching, but my goal is to challenge you; but leave you satisfied with what you've done! Example topics: Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus, Statistics, Mechanics, etc.

He proactively seeks to understand all he can about any area he struggles with, and is great at communicating whether we need to spend more time covering a topic in more depth, or if instead we just need a quick recap. With his bright and enthusiastic attitude, I look forward to every lesson.

Perfect! Absolutely amazing experience with James. His Maths is top grade, and he is very diligent and detail oriented. James helped my daughter to prepare for her A-levels and in last 3 months she improved massively. James' teaching method is very good, easily understandable and importantly he ensures that all basics are covered. He puts in great effort to ensure that she understands and he gives excellent feedback. Whole heartedly recommend James to anyone looking to have Maths lessons.
