It's very hard to remember things you don't care about. So first the student has to care. Partly in terms of what opportunities doing their very best can bring them, but also just fascination with the material itself. I genuinely think it is a priviledge to get to spend a portion of your life where your actual job is to learn more about the world. To study history. Any teaching has to begin from the postion that it's really quite wonderful we are getting to spend time doing this at all.
Once thats established. I love a print out. I self taught my A levels and so had to get very good at producing my own study materials. Charts, pictures, flashcards. Lots of these have handy digital forms that I'm now fully adept at using and can show students how to produce lots of their own learning materials. It is quite fun to make all of these. I have done a fair bit of reading on how to optimise memory retention to help myself with the tricky task of learning medieval languages. These techniques work really well with exam preparation too.
I study Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic at Cambridge. This has given me insight into the history of the British Isles in particular that complements the A level syllabus very well. I have mentored for the Summer School Futurversity and run access events in Cambridge to assist those without much support from their academic institutions to make strong applications.
Excellent! Dear Claire
Thanks for your review. Please see the explanation in detail as follow. Firstly, as we both are aware that your first lesson will be offered free, we arranged the first trial. I am sorry to let you know that the student asked me to find another tutor before she makes any final decision. The student at the end chose another tutor even though the other tutor charges a higher tuition rate than yours. Secondly, you have stated in your free trial to our student that you wish to help her re-choose her alevel subjects and offer help and consultation on application to university as you stated her current choices were not best options, which concerned the student as she expected you to teach History only. We thank you for your thoughtful consideration in support of her application, but it would work out better if you have used the time properly to teach history a level content as this was what we agreed upon for this very first trial. Thirdly, neither the student’s family nor I want to have any free consultancy from you or other tutors regarding university application, and I haven’t asked you to do anything for free except the free trial you have offered. Once again, I appreciate you offer a free trial lesson for the student, unfortunately she chose another tutor at the end. I apologies if I confused you that we want free consultancy from you, but I do wish you every success in the future.
This was a third party. Attempted to conceal what I was charging presumably in order to over charge the international student they were connecting me to. The expectations were unrealistic and they wanted a lot of free consultation.
As a teacher and examiner myself, I recommend my own students to Claire’s tuition. Her patience, and her ability to explain the subject content to students in a crystal clear way, means that she provides an excellent supplement to help students learn while encouraging them to take responsibility for their own progress. An excellent tutor.
Claire is a fantastic tutor with an amazing work ethic. She has particularly in-depth experience in access work, supporting strong university (and particularly Oxbridge) applications, and does fantastic revision and review classes. Having worked with her before, I would recommend her wholeheartedly to any prospective student.
