About Muthukumar
I am a VLSI Designer (CEG, Anna University, 2014) turned Chess Coach with a passion for helping students improve their chess skills. Since 2016, I have been coaching at Chess Gurukul, where I focus on developing students' calculation abilities through visualization exercises and enhancing their strategic understanding of key chess concepts like center control, pawn structures, overprotection, and more.
I’ve guided many students to significantly improve their FIDE ratings, including Maiteryei Mondal, a two-time state champion from West Bengal. Many of my students have progressed from a rating of 1400 to nearly 2400 on platforms like Lichess within three years. My teaching methods combine strong fundamentals with advanced positional and dynamic concepts, ensuring steady growth for every student.

As a dedicated chess coach, I focus on improving calculation skills through visualization exercises, where students solve positions without moving pieces. My approach emphasizes mastering key chess elements like center control, mobile pawns, open files, blockade, pawn majority, and pawn chain exchanges. I also delve into advanced positional concepts such as overprotection, prophylaxis, and isolated queen pawn (IQP). Furthermore, I teach dynamic strategies like initiative, development, attack, and the effective use of tempo, all while ensuring king safety.
I set rating targets for my students on online platforms like Lichess, and I've helped players progress from 1400 to nearly 2400 in just three years. My systematic teaching method focuses on both fundamentals and advanced principles, helping students steadily climb the rating ladder
