About Matt
Hi! I'm Matt, a Hong Kong/Canadian cellist with 12 years of experience in the instrument. I am 19 years old and currently studying at the London School of Economics, where I am involved with the orchestra, chamber orchestra and string quartet.
In high school, I was the principal cellist in the symphony orchestra and other various groups, leading by example. In 2022, I performed Elgar's Cello Concerto with the symphony orchestra. I also won various music awards at school.
I completed my DipARSM in 2020 and my DipABRSM the following year.
My enthusiasm for the instrument stemmed from one of my earliest role models, my teacher at the Vancouver Academy of Music from when I used to live in Canada - he was, and still is, a major inspiration both as a person, cellist and teacher and a major reason why music, and specifically the cello, is such a passion of mine.

I believe it is highly important to tailor lessons to suit each student's needs and to foster a healthy and positive environment as well as a lifelong love for the cello - to create enjoyment in playing is my number one goal. Each lesson will be structured with feedback given after lessons. I am engaging, fun, patient and determined to help every student unlock their potential by setting goals, which will also boost confidence.
Although I do not have any formal tutoring experience, as principal cellist in my high school orchestra I acted as a mentor for younger cellists by leading the section as well as helping them if they had trouble with orchestra/solo repetoire e.g. by showing them fingerings/bowings.
I teach for beginner/intermediate level; lessons will usually be an hour long but I can also do 1.5 hours.
