Jolly Phonics is a comprehensive, multi-sensory program designed to teach children to read and write using a systematic synthetic phonics approach. It is widely used and is known for being fun and child-centered. A description of Jolly Phonics classes includes the following core elements: The Five Key Skills Jolly Phonics classes focus on teaching five key skills that form the foundation of literacy: Learning the Letter Sounds: Children are taught the 42 main sounds of English, not just the 26 alphabet sounds. This includes sounds made by single letters (like /s/, /a/, /t/) and digraphs (two letters making one sound, like /sh/, /th/, /ai/). The sounds are introduced in a specific, non-alphabetical order to enable children to start forming simple words quickly. Learning Letter Formation: As each sound is introduced, children are simultaneously taught how to form and write the letter correctly using various multi-sensory methods. Blending (for Reading): Children learn to push individual sounds together to read a whole word. For example, blending /d/-/o/-/g/ to say "dog." This skill begins early in the program. Identifying Sounds in Words (Segmenting for Spelling): Children learn to listen to a word and break it down into its individual sounds, which is a key skill for spelling. For example, hearing "cat" and isolating the sounds /c/-/a/-/t/. Tricky Words: Alongside phonetically regular words, children are taught common, high-frequency words that have irregular spellings (like "said," "was," "the"). They are taught methods to read and write these "tricky words."
