About Yuwen

I am a certified Chinese language tutor with over 4 years of experience, currently pursuing a Master's in Education Technology at Columbia University.

My students come from all over the world. I have coached complete beginners to pass HSK Level 1 with near-perfect scores in just a few months, and guided students from knowing only how to say their own name to reaching HSK Level 5 (professional working proficiency) within two years. I have conducted in-depth research on language and cultural differences, with particular experience supporting second-generation immigrants reconnecting with their heritage.

I completed my undergraduate degree in NJ and am fluent in English, with a basic command of Spanish. I love traveling and have visited nine countries across four continents — experiences that have deepened my understanding of cultural exchange. Outside of teaching, I enjoy rock climbing, cycling, and yoga.

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak fluent Mandarin because it is my native language. I lived and studied in China until I moved to the United States for university. My passion for teaching Mandarin grew from my family’s experience as a homestay family since 2017, hosting international students and helping them adapt to Chinese culture.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I would say Confucius. His philosophy of Confucianism has shaped Chinese culture and laid the foundation for the Chinese way of thinking. Understanding his ideas and educational beliefs is an important step in learning Chinese. Many Chinese language schools around the world are named after him, known as the Confucius Institutes.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

Chinese culture values modesty. When a Chinese person receives a compliment, they often respond by saying “nǎlǐ nǎlǐ,” which literally means “where, where.” It expresses “I am not as good as you say.” They are happy to be complimented but prefer to remain humble.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Mandarin is the most widely spoken language in the world by native speakers. To me, it is more than just a language. It is a bridge that connects my culture, my identity, and people from all over the world who wish to understand China.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Unlike English, French, or Spanish, Chinese belongs to a completely different language family, which makes its sounds, grammar, and writing system quite distinct. The use of tones is one of the biggest challenges for learners because the same syllable can have entirely different meanings depending on its tone. However, tones also make Mandarin sound musical and expressive. Having a tutor who tailors lessons to your level and goals can make the process enjoyable and effective. At the same time, listening to music, watching films, and playing games in Chinese can make learning much more natural.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I once lived for a short time in Alaska. It was very cold but incredibly beautiful. I wrote about my journey and the stories of local fishermen, and my article was later published in a Chinese magazine, allowing more readers to learn about this amazing place.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I come from Guilin, a beautiful small city in southern China, known for its mountains, rivers, and rock climbing. Many people from around the world visit my hometown for its natural scenery, and that is where I first learned English and started communicating with people from different cultures. I once lived near a Latino community in New Jersey and taught many students from that neighborhood. Later, I completed a solo trip to Puerto Rico when I only knew three Spanish phrases: “Hola,” “Gracias,” and “Por favor.” The warmth of the people and the rhythm of the music inspired me to start learning Spanish seriously.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

I would say it is both travel and work. I work in education and business, so I interact with people every day. Language is something truly fascinating because it allows people to overcome cultural differences and bring people closer together. That is why I enjoy being a teacher; I love helping people learn Chinese so that they can confidently use the language to communicate with their families, work effectively, and travel with ease.
