About Phoenix
I began my chemistry journey tutoring at Spelman College as a sophomore chemistry student myself. I transitioned from Spelman with a B.S. in Chemistry to the University of Michigan, where I earned my Ph.D. working with Dr. Anna Mapp. During my studies, I synthesized small organic molecules to probe protein-protein interactions involved in transcription-related diseases. I also refined my teaching skills by teaching organic chemistry lecture and lab as a GSI while tutoring general chemistry to younger learners. Chemistry doesn't have to be a weeder course. Anyone can be successful with the proper support. I also try to remember the areas I struggled with when I was learning, and try to break larger, more complicated concepts into easier-to-digest pieces. I encourage my students as they learn and remind them that their questions are always welcome. No one becomes an expert overnight, but through continual practice and the bravery to ask the questions that help unlock the keys to learning. Finally, I tell my students that failure doesn't define them; rather, it is a lesson to help them understand where they need help, what's working, and what's not. The most successful people fail hard and fail often, but what makes them successful is their willingness to ask for help, their continual effort to reach their goal, and their ability to learn through their mistakes.

Hi, my name is Dr. Williams. For the past 10 years, I have worked with students from high school to undergrad to help them understand general and organic chemistry concepts. My lessons typically depend on the student, as I aim to ensure my students walk away with an understanding of the concepts they're working on. I also emphasize the importance of following directions when trying to solve problems and understanding the chemical jargon used. Most questions include hints regarding how to solve the problem. For example, when constants include units, you can use the units to guide you to the answer, or the specific wording of the problem can help you understand precisely what the question is asking, but if you don't know the jargon, how can you understand the hints? I like to use several different learning tools, from drawing pictures and diagrams to online modeling tools to personification of the molecules to make them more relatable. I also try to incorporate real-world examples into the lessons that showcase how chemistry is fundamental to our world.
