About Thomas

In my 7 years of teaching piano, I have worked with more than 150 students, helping each one grow both technically and artistically. Most of my students come from high schools and colleges, bringing diverse experiences and aspirations to our lessons. I believe that a successful teacher creates a supportive environment where students feel safe to explore and express themselves. I focus on the essentials: technique, music reading, and expressive playing, but always tailor lessons to align with what each student loves about music. One standout moment was helping a college student prepare for their first major recital. They were initially anxious and uncertain, but through a structured practice plan and encouragement, they transformed into a poised and confident performer. The standing ovation they received was a testament to their hard work and our collaborative journey. Music has the power to inspire and transform, and I am dedicated to helping students discover their own voice and confidence through the piano.

My piano teaching method blends traditional values with modern approaches, focusing equally on structure and spontaneity. I emphasize strong technique from the start, because good habits formed early lay the groundwork for confident and expressive playing. Each student begins with tailored exercises that develop finger independence, posture, and timing. As soon as possible, I introduce short pieces that integrate these skills into actual music. I choose repertoire carefully to reflect each student’s interests and strengths, balancing their preferences with pieces that challenge and stretch their abilities. I make use of storytelling and imagery to bring music to life, especially for younger students. Describing a phrase as a “gentle wave” or a “marching parade” helps them connect emotionally with the dynamics and phrasing. As students grow, I introduce more analytical thinking. We discuss form, harmonic function, and stylistic elements, often comparing recordings to gain perspective. For those interested in composing or arranging, I help develop those skills through hands-on projects.

I also believe in incorporating technology into lessons—whether through rhythm apps, notation software, or recording tools, students benefit from seeing their work in new formats. Motivation is an important part of my philosophy. I regularly set short-term and long-term goals, and we celebrate progress along the way with mini-performances, creative projects, or simply reflecting on how far a student has come. I also believe that humor and positivity go a long way. I want my students to associate piano with discovery and self-expression, not stress or fear of mistakes. At the same time, I teach the value of persistence and thoughtful repetition. I guide students in how to practice effectively, how to problem-solve when stuck, and how to stay committed to their goals. Whether a student is preparing for an exam, learning for fun, or returning to piano after years away, I aim to make lessons personal, flexible, and rewarding. Piano becomes a vehicle not just for music, but for confidence, self-discipline, and joy.
