About Joshua
Hi, I'm Joshua! I hold an MLitt in Classics and Ancient History from the University of St Andrews in Scotland, where my dissertation compared how the apostle Paul and the travel writer Pausanias each described the Roman city of Corinth. Before that, I earned a B.A. in History with a concentration in Classics from Roanoke College, graduating magna cum laude and earning election to Phi Beta Kappa.
What I love most about Classics is how much these texts still have to say to us, and I want my students to experience that too. Having learned Latin and Greek myself from the ground up, I know where students tend to get stuck, and I focus on making each concept click before moving on. My goal is for every student to leave our lessons feeling more confident than when they started.

My approach
For Latin and Greek, I teach grammar first, making each concept clear in English before applying it to the ancient language. Students learn how a construction works instead of memorizing forms. For history, I focus on reading primary sources closely and building evidence-based arguments.
A typical lesson
We will begin by reviewing the previous session. Then we can introduce a new topic and work through exercises together, answering questions as they arise.

I combine postgraduate expertise with a real enthusiasm for the ancient world, and I tailor each lesson to the student's pace and goals.
