My approach to tutoring is to build a fun, goal-focused environment where we work through homework problems together and make time to talk about the real-life importance of the subject at hand. I believe that having a friendly person to guide them through the more obtuse or, at times, frustrating problems can help preserve a student's enthusiasm for a subject, which helps them get the most out of their education. I find that practicing with detailed examples one-on-one is the best way to build the student's skill, understanding, and confidence with the material. Working on the student's current assignments also helps students keep up with their class goals and stay motivated during a tutoring session.
Here's an example of how a 60-90 minute tutoring session might flow:
-- Student summarizes what they have been doing in the classroom
-- Answer any general questions the student has about the material they are learning
-- Look over homework assignment together and identify the concepts underpinning the assignment
-- Tutor leads an example problem from the assignment or from an online resource
-- Student takes the lead answering homework problems and asks for help when needed
-- Short break: get a drink of water or a snack, talk about hobbies, do some jumping jacks? This can be any 10 minute activity that gives the student a quick brain cool-down and get them ready to focus again
-- Recap important concepts covered so far
-- Continue working on the assignment or reviewing key concepts
-- Talk about areas of interest for the student -- how does this subject relate to something that is important to them?
-- Referrals to additional resources and answers to final questions
-- (If wanted) send a session recap email to a parent or teacher to keep them up to date and recrystallize important concepts in the student's understanding
