About Roy

I’m a junior at the University of Texas at Austin majoring in Physics (Hook ’em!), and a researcher working on experimental quantum optics and theoretical/mathematical plasma physics. I’m also an experienced educator, with years of tutoring students. I currently work as an undergraduate physics TA at UT, and over the years I’ve worked with many students who feel overwhelmed by math and physics courses. I understand that struggle, and I know how to make difficult concepts intuitive. My teaching philosophy is simple: real success comes from understanding, not memorization. Instead of just showing you how to “plug and chug,” I help you learn the ideas behind each problem so you can tackle new questions with confidence. You’ll learn the techniques, but also why they work. I offer math/physics tutoring sessions at an affordable price. Using the methods I developed and use myself to study, I’ll teach you the problem-solving habits and critical thinking strategies that helped me earn straight A’s at UT Austin in physics and engineering.

I tutor intro and advanced college level math and physics including: Calculus 1/2/3, Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations, Vector Calculus, Linear Algebra, Complex Analysis, Discrete Mathematics; and Physics 1 (mechanics), Physics 2 (E&M), Physics 3 (waves and optics), Modern Physics (Intro to QM, thermo/statmech, and special relativity), Quantum Mechanics (Griffiths and Shankar level), Electrodynamics (Griffiths and Jackson level), Thermodynamics/Statistical Mechanics, and Classical Mechanics (Taylor and Marion & Thornton level) -- these are the courses I have taken; I can also teach early-graduate level physics courses including mathematical physics (group theory for physicists and applied abstract algebra with applications) and electromagnetic theory -- these are my specialties as a physicist which I am confident to teach. I am able to make my sessions either mathematically rigorous (which often involves proofs) or more toward intuition and applications, depending on your preference.

Classes are held online via Google Meet or Zoom.

A typical lesson is structured as follows:

First 20 minutes: We review how the student approach problems, identifying strengths, strategies, and misconceptions.

Next 30 minutes: I teach the underlying mathematical concepts, provide intuitive explanations, walk through key problem solving techniques, derivations of equations, etc.

Final 10 minutes: The student can ask questions about anything from the session.

I firmly believe every student can succeed in math and physics. Some people might be naturally good at it, others (like me) need training and strategy. The skills, methods, and mindset I developed will help guide you to reach your full potential in your classes!
