About Damia

Hi! I’m an English and language arts tutor with approximately five years of tutoring experience, working with students from primary school through the college level. I hold two bachelor’s degrees, in English and History, which have given me a strong foundation in literature, writing, critical thinking, and analysis.

What I enjoy most about tutoring is helping students not only strengthen their academic skills, but also become more confident in their own abilities. English and literature can sometimes feel intimidating—whether it’s tackling a difficult essay, analyzing a complex text, improving writing skills, or simply figuring out how to put your ideas into words. I enjoy helping students work through those challenges and reach the point where something that once felt difficult begins to feel manageable.

I work with students across a range of ages and skill levels, and I enjoy getting to know each student as an individual. My goal is to create an encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, exploring ideas, and developing their own voice as readers and writers.

Outside of tutoring, I love staying active and exploring new places. I enjoy running, playing soccer, hiking, swimming, and traveling.

My approach to tutoring is patient, supportive, and tailored to each student’s individual needs. I believe students learn best when they feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and working through challenges without judgment.

Rather than simply giving students the answer, I focus on helping them understand the reasoning behind it. I break difficult concepts into manageable steps, explain ideas in different ways when needed, and use examples and guided practice to reinforce understanding. As students become more comfortable with a concept, I gradually encourage them to work more independently so they can build confidence in their own abilities.

I also adapt each lesson to the student’s goals, learning style, and current level. A typical session might begin with a brief check-in and review of material from the previous lesson. We would then introduce or revisit a key concept, work through an example together, and move into guided practice where I can identify and address any areas of confusion. The student would then try problems or exercises more independently, and we would finish by reviewing what they learned, answering any remaining questions, and identifying what to focus on next.
