I approach teaching from the students' perspective. What motivates them? What are their interests? And what do they want to know? I encourage students to discover the answers and believe in affirmative learning that builds confidence. I point out what my students do right and highlight their skills. This helps them to work through difficult material or areas of learning with which they might struggle. For example, in my English tutoring for French M.A. students, I collect words from essays and discussions that they have used correctly. I add them to a Google doc and we review them. I highlight words that need review by playing word games. The students add the newly acquired (correct) vocabulary to the Google doc directly along with a definition. A typical lesson plan starts with a review of the previous week, followed by a learning goal and outline of what material will be covered during the current lesson. An introduction of the material is followed by questions and then interactive activities (i.e. 20-minutes of writing, a discussion group, a game) and then a review of the student work. If we are discussing literature, I provide historical context to help the students master the meanings and style of the work. My students thrive on this approach. What sets me apart as a tutor is developing an empathetic rapport that allows students to feel comfortable with exploring the material and their skills, while seeing concrete improvement. I want them to reach their goals. This approach works with all levels but my teaching is well adapted to high school and college students (undergraduate, masters, and doctorate). I worked my way up to a Ph.D. from community college so I also work well with a variety of learning levels/styles and backgrounds.
