About Shangavi
My cellist story began as a 9 year old who was drawn to this instrument having seen videos of '2CELLOs' on YouTube. They made me realise how string instruments aren't as 'boring' as most under 9s think, and in fact music can be what you choose to make of it! I then began lessons with my incredibly supportive teacher who ended up being my cellist mentor all the way through my years of learning the cello. After being awarded a Distinction for my Grade 8 ABRSM exam, I realised that the reason to why this teacher had been the one who taught 9 year old me how to hold a bow and continued to be the one who watched 17 year old me receive my first paid invitation to perform in a wedding with my quartet, was because he was a patient, caring and passionate music teacher. His guidance and nurturing on my musicianship journey is what has inspired me to adopt these skills and help share my love for learning music with others. My experience of playing in various orchestras, forming a quartet at school and helping out in Junior strings clubs at my school have given me the confidence to inspire youngers to pursue their interest in the cello.

My lessons are for beginners, who are in school, with a keen interest in starting their cellist journey on a strong foot. I will focus on helping your child build confidence in all areas of music and the cello: ranging from reading cello sheet music, to technique in holding the bow, tuning the strings and posture. Then, of course, these baby steps are all helping us to reach the exciting goal of learning to play musical pieces. Playing the cello is an art that encompasses many skills which is why I strongly believe that it is important to not just jump straight into the pieces. Through my years of experience, I have learnt that a good cellist is one who can do more than just read music, it is one who focuses on finer details from the start, like: the elegance of a good cellist posture, having the correct hand placement and swift bow technique. I look forward to being a part of your incredible musical journey!
