About Michael
A dedicated flutist and educator passionate about developing creativity, musical potential, and personal growth. I studied flute performance at McGill University (BMus) and The Glenn Gould School of The Royal Conservatory of Music (ADP - Full tuition scholarship). Both schools are internationally recognized for musical excellence. During my time there, I had the chance to work with some of the greatest flutists of our era both privately and in masterclasses. Privately, I have studied with Susan Hoeppner, Nora Shulman, Carolyn Christie, and Camille Churchfield. In masterclass I have played for Jeanne Baxtresser, Lorna McGhee, Robert Langevin, Stefan Hoskuldssohn, and many others. I have performed professionally as a soloist, in chamber ensembles, and with orchestras, and I currently work on a freelance basis. I also have an interest in choir singing and work as a Choral Scholar at a local church.

Lessons are based on developing the skill of reading and interpreting written classical music. Strong emphasis on flute-playing fundamentals and practice techniques. Topics: - Reading and understanding essential musical elements (pitch, rhythm, articulation, dynamics, tempo, etc.) - Efficient tone production and hand position - Dynamic posture - Use of breath in accordance with the principles of Song and Wind (Arnold Jacobs) - Practice and rehearsal techniques - Use of practice tools like a metronome and tuner - Practical music theory Lessons are designed to help students reach their individual goals and to develop confidence through striving to achieve their potential. Students are encouraged to compete in competitions and take RCM examinations. I believe musical enjoyment comes directly from competence and the fulfillment that comes with steady improvement. Because of this, I only work with students who commit to regular practice, and I will discontinue lessons if that commitment is not met. For younger students, parents share responsibility for ensuring their child has the time and structure to practice between lessons. This approach ensures that students gain the most from their time, avoid frustration, and build confidence through real progress.
