About Geoff

I'm a writer at heart. Yes, I'm also a Producer of films & TV for Eone, Lionsgate, MGM, CBC and Netflix. But good producing can only make a product a little bit better. Expert writing can make a product a lot better. In fact, nothing is more integral than the writing. Your goal, is to elicit emotion from an audience. It doesn't matter if you're writing novels, creating television or constructing a feature film. The goal is the same. Emotion is key. Getting the audience to identify with your protagonist, creating arcs for your hero and your antagonist, these are the tools you employ to achieve eliciting emotion. Think about your favorite books, television or films. What do they all have in common? That's right, they made "you feel" something. Once you understand this underlying principle, you can begin your journey of establishing yourself as a professional writer (as I have). Understanding this principle, is the most important credential I can convey, to help you understand my expertise, so I can teach you everything you need to know about writing.

There's something wrong in Hollywood today. It's like writers have forgotten how to tell compelling stories. Greed is at the heart of the issue. Directors and showrunners, with limited writing experience, believed they could pen episodes and sequels to some of the most beloved fan franchises (and earn two paychecks doing it). They were mistaken. Writing is an art, not a science. What I do as a story doctor, is help to evolve your concept into a finished product. It's more than just proper format. It's about knowing which creative choice is a mistake, and which isn't, so that you create interesting characters, compelling story plots and a satisfactory ending that will have audiences craving more. The learning curve to telling great stories is an extensive one. If it were easy, directors and showrunners could do it. Let an experienced pen guide you so you don't encounter the same pitfalls they did.

I can provide a lesson that teaches 20 years worth of experience in 10 hours. I can boil down the most important aspects of the lesson to 5 hours. Listening for five minutes, usually verifies my experience level. In one hour, you'll learn enough to knock 3 years off your learning curve. It sounds optimistic, but seriously, I wish someone had given me this advice when I got called to Paramount Studios off my very first script submission. Then, I'd be working in Hollywood now. Please understand, the rates in Hollywood dwarf rates in other countries. The work is the same. The pay is quite different. In both cases, the work needs to be stellar. I won't push you to write for Hollywood. I'll teach what Hollywood wants, and you decide if it's worth tweaking what you have. What you're paying me to do is to help you write the story you want to tell. Understanding why Hollywood wants what it does, will go a long way to getting your career started though. It allows you to navigate quicker, or else you'll spend years trying to figure things out on your own, like I did :)
