About Richard

30 Years of Primary QTS Experience – Dedicated to Unlocking Potential.

I am a career primary school teacher with three decades of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) experience teaching Year 4, 5, and 6 pupils across the national curriculum.

Having spent 30 years inside primary classrooms, I understand exactly how children learn, where common conceptual gaps form, and how to explain complex ideas in clear, encouraging ways.

Unlike general tutors or undergraduate students working for large agencies, I bring a career's worth of professional teaching pedagogy to every session. My goal is to equip Year 5 pupils with the core subject mastery and confidence they need to tackle the CSSE 11+ exam for Southend High for Boys/Girls and Westcliff High for Boys/Girls successfully.

About the lesson

Master the CSSE 11+ Exam with Expert Guidance from a 30-Year Primary Teacher.

Preparation for the Essex CSSE 11+ exam requires far more than generic worksheets. The CSSE format is unique—featuring open-ended, multi-step Maths (with no multiple-choice safety nets) and deep English comprehension paired with strict, timed continuous writing.

My small group sessions (strictly capped at a maximum of 6 pupils) are designed to bridge standard Key Stage 2 learning into full CSSE exam mastery, giving your child high individual attention without the pressure of crowded agency classes
.
What We Focus On:
CSSE Mathematics: Developing step-by-step problem-solving methods, mastering open-ended word problems, fractions, perimeter/area, ratios, and algebraic logic.

CSSE English & Reading: Deep inference training, "Point + Evidence" answer structures, vocabulary expansion, and analysing 19th-century & classic text extracts.

Continuous Writing: Mastering high-impact, short-form descriptive and narrative writing using sensory techniques, ambitious vocabulary, and advanced punctuation.

Exam Strategy: Timing, accuracy, and building calm exam-day confidence.

Class Structure & Location:

Venue: Christchurch, Colbert Avenue, Southend-on-Sea

When: Thursdays (Group 1: 4:15 PM – 5:15 PM | Group 2: 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM)

Cohort Size: Capped at Max 6 Pupils

Format: 1-hour weekly session balancing direct concept teaching (10 mins) with guided independent practice and immediate individual feedback (20 mins per subject block).
