About Olly

Hello! I'm Olly and I'm a 2nd year undergraduate student studying Classics Course IA at Balliol College, Oxford. I have lots of experience of the pressure and work load that accompany GCSE and A-level exams. I studied 12 subjects to GCSE level (achieving 11 grade 9's and 1 grade 8), which included taking Latin a year early and covering the entire Greek syllabus in one academic year, before then taking 4 A-levels and simultaneously producing an extended project essay and applying to Oxford. The subject areas that most interest me are History and Language, and I find Classics to be a perfect combination of these two different fields. My skill sets for each half of the course, the history and literature based essays and commentaries and the language based grammar exercises and translations, are both further evidenced in my two non-Classics A* A-levels, Spanish and History. As a current Oxford student, I understand the drive and confidence necessary to succeed academically, and this is something that I want to nurture and inspire in others to enable them to do the same. I am also aware that some tutors can take on an overly-tough and even intimidating persona in their sessions in order to somehow scare their pupils into knowledge. I, however, find that this approach damages confidence and discourages curiosity and questioning which are things I myself believe to be very important for successful learning. I aim to create an atmosphere in my sessions which inspires intellectual enthusiasm and interest, increases confidence, and makes my pupils more trusting in their own intelligence and ability, helping them to learn faster and better.

I am offering Latin and Ancient Greek lessons for pupils preparing for GCSE and A-level exams, focusing on different aspects of the courses including language work and translation tasks, literary commentaries and longer essay-style answers. I am happy to tailor my lessons to focus on a specific weak spot amongst these different skills, or to provide comprehensive coverage of all skills needed to succeed in these subjects. I also offer additional tutoring to help prepare candidates for the Oxford Classics admissions test (CAT) which without preparation and practice can be an intimidating prospect for many. My lessons are pupil focused and as such I am happy to structure them around what the pupil feels would be most valuable in helping them prepare for their exams. Lessons are 1 to 2 hours long and involve explanation and instruction about how to answer different questions on the exam, as well as guided practices to help the pupil put into effect the skills being taught. I am also happy to mark and provide feedback for practice questions completed by pupils, as practicing with mock exam questions can be a very good way to enhance both subject knowledge and necessary exam skills. My teaching style is relaxed and enthusiastic but also serious, and I am keen to create an environment in my lessons which enables fast learning and boosts pupils' confidence in their own ability. I am currently studying Classics at Balliol College at the University of Oxford (having received other offers from Durham, Edinburgh and Exeter) and so am learning with and from the top minds in my subject area. I have an A*in A-Level Latin and a high A in A-level Greek, as well as a further 2 A*'s in Spanish and History A-level and 11 Grade 9's at GCSE.
