About Fred
With the right approach, . I' My earliest experience of tutoring was helping my younger sister get to grips with her maths homework aged 10-16. She was finding concepts and operations that came easily to me difficult, so I had to find creative ways of making maths less abstract. The enjoyment we both got from it still informs my tutoring today. I've got pretty good at writing essays (I have a starred first class degree to prove it!) but I also love the challenge of responding to individual pupils and helping them improve. This means adapting to the particular needs of each student. In my professional tutoring experience, I've worked with kids coping with dyslexia and ADHD; and on communicating tricky concepts to those new to the English language, for whom classroom learning can be overwhelmingly difficult. My job as a tutor is to be diligent, caring and responsive. It's about getting the best results possible, but this also means inspiring interest in the subject concerned, and adapting my teaching style to find the ways the student learns best. My school, undergraduate and postgraduate study has helped me develop excellent writing, proofreading, exam preparation and research skills, as well as a familiarity with many fields and discourses. I've studied subjects including literature, philosophy, history of art and social anthropology at Edinburgh, UEA and Birkbeck, University of London. I also offer assistance working towards school and university entrance requirements. My personal experience of scholarship entrance into Westminster School and of UCAS applications has helped me understand the ins and outs of how to stand out as a candidate, and help others not make the mistakes I've seen (and made myself!) in exams, personal statements and interviews. My work as a published poet and critic combines a passionate creative spirit with careful attention to detail.
