About Tim
I'm a retired engineer and researcher who worked in and out of academics for 40 years, mostly in mechanics, biomechanics, and medical devices. While I have lots of "war stories" there is one step-off in thinking that I have seen that makes a difference: A lot of students and even professionals ask themselves "what should I be thinking?" as opposed to "what do I think?" The approach to a concept or a problem should be your own, or if you adopt a standard approach, you should actively choose it, as opposed to following along because you feel obliged to. Often this can seem disrespectful if a school or a course has an established syllabus, but the idea of individualized instruction is to let you find your way. I have also seen, in my own efforts to learn new things, that the starting point needs to be settled to make progress. Understanding your reference knowledge is key to catching on. Initial discussions should be open, and not judgmental, so we can get off on the right foot.

In my career I have worked with an array of bright people who often have to understand an issue in Mechanics or Mechanical Engineering while having a relatively thin background in some of the underlying concepts. I have worked with Lawyers, Surgeons, and an array of students at many levels to break down issues and to fill out their understanding of concepts. A typical student could be a biology major moving into bioengineering or a medical student working on unfamiliar technology.
A typical lesson plan could be as structured as an undergraduate course or based on a set of objectives. Typically we will work with an established text (or two) and go through concepts, and run through some example problems.
What sets me apart as a tutor is a long and varied experience and the ability to find references to firm up understanding. I am a retired researcher, so I can work from a wide knowledge base.
The lessons I can offer are for students who need extra insights to understand courses that rely on unfamiliar concepts, and for professionals who want to "brush up" on mechanics issues to participate more effectively at work.
