English and creative writing tutor offering support from KS4 to higher education

Methodology

I am focused on the individual development of students, and will offer different methods of assessment to measure progress and prepare for formal exams. I encourage use of technology, collaboration and peer-to-peer support.
I generally focus sessions on one major topic, and divide this into the key features, in order to maximise student engagement and support their learning and development.

Background

I am a writer and tutor/teacher, who has worked in further and higher education, delivering GCSE English sessions as well as providing one-to-one support with students with special educational needs and specific learning differences. I have prepared students for formal examination and worked both with groups and individuals to set specific targets in order to support attainment.

Personal Statement
With over five years’ educational experience across different roles within the post compulsory and higher education sectors, and a continued drive to develop and stretch my teaching experience, I am keen to embrace a new challenge and provide an imaginative, creative and supportive environment for students to fulfil their academic and personal potential, as well as developing their own creative and critical engagement.
I have worked with a range of students from different cultural, academic and neurodiverse backgrounds. I fully support the process of widening participation within universities, though am equally aware of the challenges, having worked with students with various obstacles, whether through physical wellbeing, mental health, caring commitments or having come out of abusive domestic dynamics, and am mindful of the fact that higher education is not always a suitable option, but that students need to feel empowered to make rational, informed decisions about their educational experiences. I have worked with students with mental health difficulties, SpLDs and Asperger’s/ADHD, teaching as well as providing learning support and specialist mentoring, and these multiple “gazes” have increased my understanding of the importance of cross-collegiate communications between academic staff, pastoral representatives and other student support settings.
I have an arts background and strong writing skills that allow me to be creative, intuitive and empathetic to people from all walks of life. This has further enforced my principle that it is not possible to adopt a “one-size-fits-all” model with regards to learning and development. I therefore feel it is imperative that ongoing work with students is designed to individualise their support strategies and working documents.
My background in creative writing, drama and English literature have increased my passion both for creative output and critical engagement with texts from different cultural and historical settings, and I feel it is imperative that as a lecturer I am encouraging my students to engage with as broad a spectrum of texts in order to support their own creative and critical development. I am also keen in promoting a safe space for peer support, and believe in providing a variety of ways of working to maximise student engagement.
As both an educator and a mentor I am able to identify where students often struggle or mismanage their time so they miss deadlines and how this might impact negatively on their mental health. I would like to apply for the Specialist mentoring course because I am a well organised and focused and in my current job I help students to develop and maintain more realistic study patterns by enhancing their ability to overcome barriers to success, and thereby providing them with a more equal chance of achieving academic and personal goals.
My roles in FE have meant I have supported students with timetabling, goal-setting, and managing self-imposed expectations about appropriate levels of study. My roles have also helped students come to terms with their diagnosis and any medication they have been prescribed in relation to the impact it may have on their studies.
