About Clara

I am a passionate and patient tutor of literature, hoping to encourage and instil in-depth knowledge within my students. I never want to make students feel as if anything is out of reach or tedious.
In lessons, I include cultural backgrounds, close readings, the distilled perspectives of literary critics and pose questions to be discussed and considered over time. So far my experience has been with other undergrad and masters students, but I am eager to begin tutoring secondary and older primary school students. I would prefer to tailor the lesson structure to the student; depending on their material, goals and interests so I am afraid I cannot give a concrete lesson plan at this moment.

I have a pending first class masters in English and Politics, over five years of experience as an editor of film and literature reviews and am a voracious writer and reader in my free time. My specialist subject areas include political and literary theory, medieval, American antebellum, native American, Victorian, Beat and modern literature. I also have extensive experience in debating and would be happy to tutor students on this subject in addition to English also.

I am happy to have students in my family home if you are comfortable with this - I have a wonderful range of tea and baked goods! - although we do have a greyhound so this may not be wise for those with allergies.

About the lesson

I am a lateral thinker focussed not only on great results but in engendering a fascination and understanding of literature's connection to wider culture. I strive to connect the students' interests with the material they encounter, in order to foster deep and long-lasting connections.
