About Mark

Hi, I’m Mark. I’m a University of Toronto graduate with a background in Philosophy and 10 years of corporate sales experience — a career where clear thinking, persuasive writing, and confident communication were part of my work every day.

I tutor English students in Grades 6–12, including students in IB English. My focus is helping students become stronger readers, clearer thinkers, and more confident writers. I work especially well with students who need support with essay writing, literary analysis, close reading, grammar, vocabulary, presentations, and organizing their ideas.

What makes my approach different is that I come prepared. Every session is planned in advance with a clear structure, so students are not simply bringing homework and hoping for help. Lessons are tailored to the student’s level and goals, with a balance of review, skill-building, close reading, analysis, and writing practice.

I also work with IB English students on the skills that matter most in the program: close reading, literary analysis, developing original interpretations, organizing arguments, and writing with clarity and precision.

I treat English as a practical skill, not just a school subject. Strong writing is not about using fancy words or memorizing rules. It is about understanding an idea, explaining it clearly, and supporting it with evidence. That skill matters in English class, but it also matters in university, interviews, presentations, and professional life.

I do not rewrite or complete assignments for students. My goal is to help students build their own skills, voice, and independence.

My lessons are prepared in advance, so every session has a clear direction and purpose. I focus on the skills that lead to real improvement in English: critical reading, clear thinking, stronger writing, grammar, vocabulary, and confident communication.

A typical session begins with a short review of what we worked on previously, so students can build skills over time rather than starting from scratch each week. From there, we usually move into a focused grammar or vocabulary section, followed by a longer close reading and analysis activity. This is where students learn how to read more carefully, identify meaningful details, explain literary techniques, and develop stronger interpretations.

We then apply those skills to writing. Depending on the student’s needs, this might involve essay planning, thesis development, paragraph structure, integrating evidence, improving clarity, or revising an assignment in progress.

For students in Grades 9–12, including IB English students, lessons are especially focused on literary analysis, essay structure, argument development, close reading, and the writing skills needed for senior English and university-level work.

Students do not just receive corrections. They learn why certain choices are stronger, how to improve their own work, and how to apply those skills independently in future assignments.

I do not rewrite or complete assignments for students. My goal is to help students build their own skills, confidence, and voice.
