I base my teaching around a mother tongue approach. I demonstrate a lot to my students so they can internalise their music by ear, and learn by imitation. I pay close attention to detail, particularly with dynamics and articulation right from the note learning stages as I don’t believe this detail should only come after the notes have been learnt. I sing the melodic lines and encourage my students to do so during note learning stages to develop their inner ear. I include harmonic analysis where ever possible to support their knowledge of theory in relation to their repertoire. I support development of technique with scales, and studies such as Hanon. I incorporate elements of my conservatoire training such as the Alexander technique.
