  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in private tutoring during my sophomore year of high school. It all started when I was helping my friends study for a test, and they complimented me and encouraged me to continue helping people in math and english. That allowed me to have enough confidence to take the first step in tutoring, and now I tutor in math, history, english, and science.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I tutor in math, history, english, and science, from the elementary level to the high school level. My favorite subject to tutor in is elementary math because I want to become an elementary teacher in the future. Although math was never my favorite subject, I enjoy helping others understand it!
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

The person that inspired me to tutor is my mom. She is an elementary school teacher that always took the time to make sure her students not only understood the material, but also felt confident. As I tutor, I take the things she has taught me and apply them to every session so that students have a better understanding while also growing their confidence.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

To be a good tutor, I believe one should be patient and understanding. It takes patience to work with a wide range of students, especially at the elementary level. It also takes understanding as all students don't learn the same way, so being able to be understanding and versatile are great qualities that benefit tutors.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

The first elementary student that I tutored was full of energy and positivity. However, she wasn't confident in spelling or math. It was very sad to see such a bright student upset with herself because she felt like she wasn't good enough. So, the first thing we worked on was confidence. We practiced the concepts she already knew and paired them with a few new concepts each session, so that she could see that she is a good student. Once her confidence started growing, so did her ability to grasp new concepts. She became excited to learn new things and didn't automatically become upset if she didn't understand something new the first time. I am so proud of her for changing her mindset on school and I'm happy that I was able to help raise her confidence in math and spelling, as well as help raise her grades.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I have faced numerous challenges in school because I was always trying to take the hardest classes. Balancing hard classes in school with club and high school sports was hard, but I always worked to find the time to study. My hardest subject was math because it was the most complex for me, so using all the resources available to me was a great help. This included videos, my teacher's office hours, and my classmates. This allowed me to excel in my schoolwork as well as my extracurriculars.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion is teaching younger students and instilling in them the belief that they can achieve anything they work towards. I've seen so many students start to give up in school, and this limits their chances to achieve their goals. So I am constantly working to show students that they can do well in school so that they can work towards their goals!
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

I am a Superprof because I work to understand the needs of every student. I enjoy the challenge of finding out how each student learns, and I work to adapt my teaching to fit their style. I am patient and understanding, and this allows students to feel safe rather than judged. I work everyday to make sure that students gain confidence through my teaching so that they can go off and do bigger and better things.
