About Julia
I am new to teaching piano formally, though have experience in helping children read music, play scales, and learn notes.
I have many years experience as a musician, starting the piano 17 years ago. I have also attained Grade 8 in violin, and Grade 6 in singing. I was trained classically, though am able to read any style of piano music well. I have less experience in improvisation, though this is something that I am personally working on.

I am happy to teach students of all ages, from complete beginners up to grade 3. I am flexible in my approach, and will work with whatever is desired by the individual.
Generally, I think that it is important to first start with the basics of learning how to read music, and how to apply this to playing the piano. How we choose to go about this will depend on how you best learn, but I find that flashcards are helpful.
As you progress, lessons will begin with a warm-up in the form of scales and arpeggios (I didn't enjoy this when I was younger, but it equips you with the ability to learn how to play any music!). We can then play pieces - I am open to you bringing pieces, or I can find music that I think would be appropriate. It really is up to you. If you are determined to challenge yourself to achieving grades, then we can work more formulaically. Equally, we can just play for fun.
I'm a kind and understanding person, and though I will encourage you to challenge yourself, I don't believe that it is helpful nor my job to be strict with you. I think that learning is best achieved when we ourselves believe that we can do it, and I want to help you to do this.
