About Oscar
I have been working in humanities and language education since completing my A-Levels in 2012. Graduating with a 1st in Humanities: War, Conflict and Modernity in 2016, I currently work as a full-time academic mentor at Roundhay Sixth Form, where I support students studying A-Levels and BTEC qualifications across the full range of subject areas. As such, I am experienced and adept at supporting students revise for exams, complete coursework, learn new content, and keep organised with a large amount of work.

I can support KS3, GCSE, and A-Level students on specific humanities subjects such as History, English Language & Literature, Politics etc, and I can support degree level students complete extended pieces of writing such as a dissertation. I work in a focused yet informal way, as I know people learn best when they are at ease and able to have fun.
I use a goals-oriented approach, using resources to structure study in the medium-long term, and then work to that timetable, adapting when necessary. In this way, my mentees become more disciplined and flexible students, able to manage their time and studies now and into the future.

Oscar was my school Academic Mentor whilst I was in year 13. During my time with Oscar, I always felt a sense of care and warmth from him as well as a real want to actually help me succeed. He was always ready with revision ideas and would go out of his way to find techniques to help me with my exam stress. Oscar connected with me on my level and never approached me with an air of superiority or ever made me feel inferior. He was very keen to quickly find out what I wanted help on and establish my areas of academic weakness in order to tackle them head-on. I have no hesitation in recommending him as a tutor.
Mr Stafford is a sixth form mentor who is a specialised linguist who has been working with a range of different students at Roundhay sixth form, helping to improve their academic achievements. This has been carried out by helping them get into the education mindset and helping them to manage the time spent on their A-level or BTEC qualification. During my 2 years at Roundhay sixth form, it has been a really long journey due to the fact that I was not really prepared for the challenges which I would face at the A level stage because I still had the GCSE mindset. In year 12, I was really struggling with the stress and anxiety due to the workload which I had whilst carrying out chemistry, maths and biology, sport. I had no idea on how to manage my time, I never use to manage to complete exams within the required amount of time because I was also having difficulty in the comprehension of questions , later on in the year I had been diagnosed as being partially dyslexic, hence why I found myself underperforming at these subjects . One day, I spoke to Mr Stafford who is a member of the sixth form team and told him about the challenges I had faced near the end of year 12 in preparation of my AS exams, I started attending one to one sessions with Mr Stafford and he would help me with the interpretation of exam questions and exam technique. I managed to finish year 12 with the grades of C,C,C, Merit. From the start of year 13, having done a lot of pre-reading for my subjects during the 6 week holidays I was felt more prepared to face challenges of the A2 specification. In year 13, I carried on working with Mr Stafford more often and week by week the times taken to complete an exam paper began to decrease and within my subjects, I was beginning to see drastic improvements in terms of revision of content and in exams. The school had then raised my predicted grades to A,A,B,D*, regarding the way I had now been performing with the help of Mr Stafford. Leading on to my A-level exams which I recently carried out many teachers had really high hopes for me in terms of results, thanks to the learning platform which I was provided by Mr Stafford.
Oscar tutored my son following a serious illness to help him return to education. He was highly conscientious, reliable, creative, and appropriately focused on my son's educational and other the needs. He completely fulfilled all we asked of him. His academic, professional and social achievements speak for themselves of a very able, very articulate and highly skilled tutor.
Oscar has been my mentor for the past two years and honestly he has helped me so much providing me academic support and emotional support. He is a lovely, kind, caring and a positive, self motivated individual. Throughout my journey in sixth-form Oscar has always motivated me and pushed me to succeed with my BTEC courses. He has helped me with my English in my coursework. Oscar is definitely someone who I’ve always gone to speak to because he gives good advice and knows what he is doing. He is a very organised and intelligent person. Without the 100% effort he put in to motivate me, I wouldn’t have applied to university as I would have dropped out at the beginning of sixth-form when I was demotivated. I know that he has been good to many other students in my sixth-form. I believe that he is strongly a great professional as a mentor and will be able to support other students academically as well as emotionally.
