About Ben
I am currently a secondary school mathematics teacher with 5 years experience, reaching the role of deputy head of mathematics.
I am currently taking up more private tutoring after some success with it in my previous years as it was something I truly enjoyed. I have taught both foundation and higher GCSE students, all achieving the grades that they set out to get, provided that the hard work is in place! (Testimonials can be given upon request)
On average, my students have performed one grade higher than their predictions that were calculated at their school.
I have a strong understanding of exam board criteria having worked in two different schools with two different exam boards. Therefore, I will be able to ensure that exam technique becomes a focal point when revision takes place so that the tutee will be able to tick the right boxes!
My patience is one of my strongest traits - if a tutee struggles to understand a concept I always look for alternative ways to demonstrate and explain until the learning takes place.

From my experience in teaching, I’ve gone down the path of combining research in cognitive science with classroom practice. I introduce new knowledge in small chunks, with opportunities for checking understanding and independent practice. This knowledge will then be checked in the following session by way of low-stakes questioning and a recap if necessary.
Low-stakes is important because we want confidence to build!
I deliver new content by using a range of techniques such as using analogies, reference to what they learned at primary school, visualisation and in some cases derivation to assist understanding.
Using this methodology in a 1-1 setting is powerful, as it is in the classroom, so the progress will be excellent. Any misconceptions can also be quickly identified and corrected in a fun way!
I’m able to assist outside of tutoring sessions if necessary - feel free to email or video chat so we can talk through any problems or questions you may have.

Maths is not a strong point in our household and the children have grown in confidence and feel far less anxious about Maths as a subject having been tutored by Ben (Mr Foster). Our Son has now completed his GCSE’s and is really happy with the grade that he is predicted to obtain, he has told us that he loved having Mr Foster as a tutor and being there to support him when needed.
We were very comfortable having Ben in our home to tutor, we enjoyed his weekly visits and the children always looked forward to seeing him. Ben has always been very polite and professional, what I liked the most was the way he engaged with the children and allowed them to be themselves, they always felt that they could be very honest with him about how they were feeling and what areas of Maths they found difficult. Ben was very good at breaking topics down so that the children could understand and remember tasks ready for tests at school.
As a family we wish Mr Foster every success for the future.Ben was an excellent Maths tutor for my daughter. His calm, patient and professional manner helped to instil confidence in her, allowing her to be honest about her difficulties in the subject, assisting her growth and competence in Maths. I would definitely recommend him.
