About Catherine
Growing up in South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and New Zealand, I was influenced by diverse cultures that shaped my musical journey. I began piano at five and soon found my passion for the cello, which has been my focus ever since.
I trained at the Purcell School in England, Bachelor of Music at the Basel Music Academy in Switzerland, a Master of Music degree at the University of Music & Performing Arts Stuttgart in Germany. I completed a Postgraduate Artist Diploma at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music in London.
I have performed at venues such as Wigmore Hall, St James's Piccadilly, and the Royal Opera House, and have recorded at renowned studios including Abbey Road and RAK in London. My repertoire spans classical to contemporary, allowing me to connect with varied audiences.
I have also performed at cultural events like the Embassy Series at St Martin-in-the-Fields and the Korean Music Festival in London. I am passionate about using music to support meaningful causes, including organising fundraising concerts for the European Alliance for Human Rights in North Korea.
My playing style reflects my varied training and experiences, aiming to create memorable and moving performances in every setting.

Pre-School Kids
At this age, learning the cello focuses on foundational musical skills through play-based learning. We explore the instrument's parts, plucking strings, and making simple sounds gradually building strength and coordination.
What we work on: developing fine motor skills, basic rhythm (clapping, tapping), and ear training through singing along with their cello playing.
Lesson style: Highly interactive with short activities, musical games, and simple songs they can play quickly to build confidence.
Young Children
Young cellists at this age start reading music, developing posture, and working on finger placement for notes. They also learn about dynamics and basic musical phrasing.
What we work on: scales, simple melodies, reading music on the staff, beginner ensemble skills if they’re part of a school group.
Lesson style: Fun yet structured, using engaging pieces that are familiar to them and introducing practice strategies that empower them to problem-solve.
Older Children
Older students typically focus on more complex techniques like vibrato, shifting, and learning to perform longer, expressive pieces from the classical repertoire. For those preparing for exams or performances, we work on both technical proficiency and emotional expression.
What we work on: mastering scales and arpeggios, advanced bowing techniques, music theory that directly relates to their pieces, preparing for exams or auditions.
Lesson style: Lessons are a balance between technique building and creative expression. Teens are encouraged to explore pieces they love while expanding their skills.
Adults
Whether you're a beginner or returning to the cello after a long break, lessons are designed to be performance-oriented, ensuring that you can play music you love without spending excessive time on technical drills. We focus on getting you to play recognizable tunes early on, while integrating technique naturally as part of the music.
What we work on: Quickly building the ability to play pieces you enjoy, refining tone and posture in a way that enhances performance, and focusing on your favorite styles or genres without overwhelming you with complex exercises.
Lesson style: My approach prioritises playing—tailoring lessons to your goals, whether that means learning a specific piece, improving your sound, or working on enjoyable repertoire. We'll focus on practical, healthy techniques to support your playing, making sure you can progress and enjoy the music without strain.
