About Catherine
When I was in high-school I was lucky enough to be able to take extra-curricular Latin classes at my high-school. I was even luckier to have an excellent teacher, who fuelled not only my enthusiasm for Latin and Greek, but also for the modern languages, and encouraged me to pursue a career as a linguist.
I studied Classics and French at the University of Manchester, and spent one year studying at the Sorbonne in Paris, where I tutored Latin, in French. I graduated with a double first.
Studying the ancient alongside the modern has allowed me to draw comparisons between not only the languages, but also literature and culture.
Whilst at University I had my first experience of teaching with a University based outreach, teaching the Classics in local schools to those who wouldn't ordinarily have the chance to learn them - a position I had been in 10 years prior. Since graduating, I have worked as a Classics teacher to students aged 11-18, teaching GCSE and A-Level prep in a major British public school.
I am an enthusiastic teacher, as I'm very happy to have been able to make a career out of something I love, and I am very keen to train as many young Classicists and linguists as possible.

I am a first class dual honours graduate in Classics and French with experience teaching the Classics from ages 11-18 in a major English public school.
Teaching methods vary by student and depending on the subject, but as a broad outline:
Latin and Ancient Greek:
- a variety of grammar exercises practising morphology and syntax, and regular translations to build vocabulary. This will follow (as a rough guide) the Latin and Greek to GCSE books, and for A-level and beyond the Latin and Greek beyond GCSE books.
French:
- I can offer French speaking and pronunciation practice
- Comprehension practice
- Writing practice and essay guides
Lessons in 45 minute or 1 hour blocks
