About Jaco
I'm a high school science teacher with an M.Ed in Advanced Teaching, specializing in STEM with a focus on inquiry-based learning. I currently teach Biology and Integrated Science, and I've taught both in Cape Town and internationally, which has given me a broad perspective on how students learn best across different settings and curricula.
What I enjoy most about teaching is the moment a concept finally clicks. Science can feel overwhelming when it's presented as a list of facts to memorize, but once students understand the "why" behind it, it becomes much more approachable and, honestly, a lot more interesting.
As a tutor, I work with students to break down tricky topics, build confidence, and develop the kind of scientific thinking that sticks well beyond the next exam. I'm patient, encouraging, and I adapt each session to the student in front of me, whether that means revisiting the basics, working through past papers, or going deeper for students who want a challenge.

Lessons are tailored to each student's needs and goals, whether that's preparing for a test, catching up on missed content, strengthening core skills, or going beyond the syllabus.
Subjects: Biology, General/Integrated Science, and middle and high school science more broadly.
Levels: Middle school through high school (Grades 7–12).
Curricula: Experienced with NGSS (American curriculum), and comfortable supporting [CAPS / IGCSE / IB — keep whichever apply].
What a typical session looks like:
A quick check-in on what the student is working on and where they're feeling stuck
Working through the concept together using questions, examples, diagrams, and real-world connections rather than just lecturing
Practice with exam-style questions, data interpretation, or written explanations
A short recap so the student leaves knowing exactly what they've learned and what to focus on next
Format: [Online / in person in Cape Town / both]. Online lessons use a shared whiteboard and documents so we can work through problems together in real time.
Parents: I'm happy to share brief updates on progress and areas to focus on, so you know how your child is doing.
The first lesson is a chance to get to know the student, identify any gaps, and set clear goals for our sessions together.
