About Calvin
With my extensive background in Spanish, education, and leadership, I inspire confidence in my students by drawing from real-world experiences that have shaped my understanding of both the language and teaching. I lived in Chile for two years, fully immersed in the culture and language, giving me a deep and authentic command of conversational Spanish. I graduated from BYU with a major in Spanish, where I earned multiple scholarships for academic excellence.
In addition to my formal education, I served as the Chair of the Latino Medical Student Association, showcasing my leadership in promoting education and inclusivity. I have four years of experience as a medical interpreter, making me a valuable resource for students who need to learn Spanish for professional purposes, particularly in healthcare. My teaching experience, medical missions in South America, and time as a tutor further enhance my ability to adapt to students of all levels.
What sets me apart is my ability to make lessons both personalized and practical, whether you’re a beginner, a professional, or someone interested in learning conversational Spanish. Outside of teaching, I’m married and passionate about the outdoors. I’m an avid skier, snowboarder, dirtbiker, and surfer, which helps me connect with students who share a love for adventure.
My lessons are professional, engaging, and tailored to meet each student’s specific needs, ensuring progress and confidence in speaking Spanish.

Teaching Method and Techniques:
I emphasize an immersive, practical approach, focusing on real-world applications of Spanish. Having lived in Chile for two years and worked as a medical interpreter, I understand the nuances of both conversational and professional Spanish. I tailor lessons based on each student’s goals, integrating cultural context, grammar, and vocabulary in a meaningful way. My medical mission experience allows me to offer specialized tutoring in medical Spanish for those in healthcare fields.
Typical Lesson Plan:
-Warm-up (5-10 minutes): Start with casual conversation in Spanish to gauge comfort and practice fluency.
-Core Lesson (30 minutes): Focus on grammar, vocabulary, and specific skills the student needs to work on (e.g., reading, writing, or speaking). I might use real-world scenarios relevant to the student’s goals, such as medical settings, business conversations, or travel.
-Cultural Immersion (10 minutes): Share insights from Latin American culture, particularly from Chile and South America, to deepen the student’s understanding and make the language more engaging.
-Practice and Homework (10-15 minutes): Provide exercises, from conversational practice to written assignments, to reinforce what we covered. I offer feedback that encourages improvement without feeling overwhelming.
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor:
My unique combination of practical experience and academic expertise sets me apart. I’ve lived in Chile, majored in Spanish at BYU, served as the Chair of the Latino Medical Student Association, and have 4 years of medical interpretation experience. My lessons are not just about learning the language but also understanding its application in real-world contexts like medicine, travel, and business. I am personable and passionate about sharing the beauty and practicality of Spanish.
