About Jessica

Outside of tutoring, I’m a skilled academic in my own right. In high school, I was the recipient of four full ride academic based scholarships totaling $600,000 after being selected as a member of the Allstate Academic Team. I went on to attend a top 20 university. Beyond classwork, I am familiarized with various standardized test and test taking techniques (I received a 34 ACT, 5s on various AP exams, and am experienced with SAT-IIs.) My experience has also given me proficiency in various study techniques, writing styles, and organization skills. I’m available to tutor all subjects but particularly adept in history (European, US, and World), government, micro/macroeconomics, basic French, geometry, introductory algebra, pre-calculus, as well as other social and soft sciences.

I most enjoy watching students “learning how to learn.” Beyond covering the content of that day’s lesson, I think it’s critical for students to begin developing the ability to recognize when a certain study technique is working for them and when it’s not. The more we can expand and diversify their collection of study methods, the more empowered a child is to navigate their own way through new concepts and take different approaches. (The goal, after all, should be for students to eventually not need me anymore!)

It’s great if I can teach them that 2+2=4 and why that is, but even more rewarding to watch them learn how to reason through a concept for themselves, apply different study techniques for different subjects, strategize various study plans for tests, take notes in a way that works for them, organize projects/homework, and even teach themselves new material. I find it very satisfying to know a child didn’t just grasp a particular lesson, but has learned how to be an active, confident student; those are the strengths that will bolster them for years to come.

One of my first teaching experiences actually occurred in the dance studio! I trained extensively as a ballet dancer throughout my childhood, and was asked by one of the coaches I worked with to take on classes for the 7-9 year old age group while I was still in high school. I had to learn very quickly how to engage a room full of young, energetic children in whatever lesson we were working on that day. In such environments, there is a balancing act between giving individualized attention and making sure that the group as a whole was engaged and learning.

Simultaneously, I began running peer tutoring sessions for fellow high school students through National Honors Society and a Peer Mentorship program. Working one-on-one with older students was a very different experience to say the least! There is a foundation of trust that needs to be established during those sessions. I found it most productive to approach these sessions as a team tackling the coursework together and asking genuine questions back and forth, rather than give into a traditional “tutor telling the tutee what to do” dynamic.

I have tutored in multiple mediums, with experience in various types of tutoring (group vs. one on one, test prep, homework help, etc.) Currently, I contract for Big Apple Tutoring and Varsity Tutors when not freelancing. About the lesson

*While New Yorkers are practicing social distancing/quarantining to limit transmission of Covid19, sessions will only be available via video sessions (skype, zoom, or facetime).

I like to start by having a conversation with the parents or student, if they’re amenable, prior to the first session. It’s really beneficial to establish why they’re looking for tutoring and what their specific needs are before an initial session. It is also very helpful if we can determine what material we’ll be working with in a first session. After the first couple lessons with a student, I like to have another chat with the student or parents to make some recommendations on how we move forward. I don’t believe in a ‘one size fits all’ approach, and think the process for working with a new student needs to be based on my work with that child and their needs.

I’ve worked with students ages 7-15. Some of my students needed specialized attention in a certain subject, while others just required general guidance in moving through coursework/homework and learning organization, reading skills, study techniques, etc. I think regardless of the student’s age or specific needs, making sure that you’ve fostered a fun, positive environment is paramount (children learn so much more when they’re actively engaged with the material and believe that they can tackle harder concepts).

Most importantly, I would say try to have a conversation or meet the tutor before you hire them. (If you’re a parent hiring a tutor for a younger student, you could introduce your child for a short “hello” at the end of your initial phone call.) An important part of the tutoring sessions is compatible personalities, and you can’t gauge that without speaking to someone. It’s a fact that students learn more in a fun, comfortable environment; so finding someone who can make learning exciting (instead of boring) and foster a safe atmosphere (instead of one where students feel they are just being directed to do the work, or are afraid to get something wrong) is more than half the battle. You would be surprised by how often tutors become disengaged during sessions and in turn cause students to become bored and do the bare minimum to finish the work. So try to consider personality as well as specialty.

For students 11 or younger, it’s great if the parents can make an effort to help them with homework at some point with an eye towards determining what areas need improvement. While a teacher’s feedback is obviously informed and helpful, no one knows a child like the parents. In order to better clarify your child’s needs, and thus determine what you’re looking to gain from tutoring, I’d say it’s important to trust your own instincts and develop your own opinions while working through some assignments with them.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are you hoping to achieve from tutoring? Are you looking for general assistance working through homework/assignments, or is there a specific subject that is challenging? Within that subject, do you always feel confused or is there simply a certain aspect that we need to catch you up on as quickly as possible? Is there a certain component of school work that you want to work on (i.e. test taking, writing papers, reading assignments, efficient note taking, problem sets, standardized test prep, etc.)? What types of assignments do you already feel comfortable completing yourself, and what assignments seem daunting? There are different steps in completing a unit of curriculum (reading materials, then homework assignments, quizzes and other small assessments, then the larger tests and papers), where exactly in that process do you begin to feel you’re not performing to your satisfaction? Asking yourself questions like these not only sharpens your focus, but also increases your chances of achieving your goals faster. Furthermore, if I know of another tutor that is better suited for your specific needs, I’d rather refer you to them; the only way to know this is determine what that student is hoping to achieve!

Lastly, from a purely logistical perspective, what kind of schedule are you working with? How frequently do you want to have a tutor? How long should those sessions last (do you want a thorough hour long session, or are you just looking for a half hour session to help you clarify some concepts)? What days/times are you going to be most productive/focused (because that is when you should be scheduling appointments)?

My standard pricing for a new student is $60 per hour of private coaching or $30 for half an hour. If a student would like to purchase a bundle of classes it will be $100 for three hour long private sessions. Payments are required up front, and I am able to accept those payments via Paypal or Venmo.
