About Chris
I am a part-time musician, currently playing in two bands as a rhythm/lead guitarist and lead singer. Being able to create and express yourself through the musical art form is, in my opinion one of the most therapeutic, empowering, and beautiful experiences in life. My passion for teaching stems from my own experience when starting to play the guitar. Unlike most musicians, I started relatively later in life in my mid 20's. I was eager to learn but struggled to find lessons and teachers that could make music theory and its application to the instrument make sense. After countless hours spent on YouTube, online memberships, and group lessons, I finally found an instructor who has been my mentor for the past 4 years, who was able to make music theory interesting and easily applicable. As a result I was able to build off this invaluable gift of knowledge, find my own style and sound, as well as a unique approach to sharing this wisdom with others.
I take a streamlined approach in teaching the most important parts of music theory to the student, providing them with everything they need to know to make sense of the guitar. A vast majority of beginner and intermediate players will encounter periods of frustration and discouragement, and in turn will never experience the true joys that playing an instrument provides (trust me I've been in that position plenty of times). This is because the student lacks the foundational music theory knowledge to overcome hurdles that are quite easy with just a little theory knowledge taught in an easily digestible way. This coupled with basic technique and applying them to the students favorite genre's and songs is the approach I take to keep the student motivated and having fun, all whilst finding their own unique style and sound for expressing themselves. I look forward to helping you find your own sound and style too!
I began teaching friends and colleagues in my personal and professional network a few years ago. You would be amazed at how many people at one point in their life have tried to learn an instrument and gave up because of an overload of info, or became discouraged due to bad teaching experiences.
My friends saw my progression in music and guitar and how rapid it was, and became interested in learning from me. At the time I was still learning myself, but the foundational knowledge was fresh in my head which helped me teach it from a beginners standpoint to other beginners. I then realized I had a knack for teaching, mainly because I truly enjoy helping others express themselves in a creative and musical way.
I am a part-time musician, playing in two bands (One is an Indie/Soul band and the other is a RnB/Soul band). Being in a band has taught me a wealth of knowledge and has expanded my creative process beyond my expectations. Playing with others is extremely helpful in the teaching process because it helps you understand other peoples learning methods and thinking process. It also builds and strengthens general music theory knowledge beyond the instrument that you play and makes you a better all around musician (timing, dynamics, performance), which in turn has made me a better teacher.
I also have a guitar and music mentor, who I have adopted a lot of my teaching practices and methods from, and continue to invest in educating myself in order to educate my students in the best way possible.

I always like to start by having a discussion about the student's goals, and also general discussion to get to know my students more to create a good teacher - student foundation. I ask that student's be prepared to discuss the following topics:
- Length of time they have been playing
- Favorite genre's of music
- What got them interested in Guitar
- Goals and what they would like to achieve
- What they are looking for in a teacher
This initial discussion helps me to curate a teaching plan that best suits the student.
I mostly work with beginner to intermediate guitar players.
I would say that for a student, it's most important to have an understanding of what you (the student) would like to gain from music lessons. Be humble and honest in assessing where you are currently when rating your skill and knowledge in guitar. Be prepared to talk about your goals, your favorite music, and general interests that you can discuss with your teacher.
In addition to my passion for guitar, I also have a passion for writing, singing, and producing my own music. I have recently been challenging myself to produce songs outside of my comfort zone and usual genres. I just released a couple songs on my SoundCloud and Spotify that I produced and it was a fun experience!

*In general, ratings follow the below guidelines:
Beginner - little to no music theory knowledge, knows a few open chords on guitar (if any), can possibly play a few songs, intro to barre chords, can learn songs and the different chord shapes but not quite understand why those chords go together in the song or why those strings and fingering positions make up a chord and make the sound that they do.
Intermediate - solid understanding of music theory, the number system, all notes in each musical key, knows the notes that make up a minor, major, and diminished chord in each key, knows the pentatonic and major scales, able to embellish chords and notes with hammer on's, slides, hammer offs, vibratos, etc., can find notes to solo within the pentatonic and major scales over a backing track, can easily flow between chords when playing, can easily play barre chords based off the E and A strings.
Advanced - Deep understanding of music theory and the number system, understands the caged system, knows advanced concepts such as triads and arpeggios, can hit all notes in each pentatonic and major scale position across the neck in under 4 seconds, vast understanding of the entire guitar neck, possibly has developed relative pitch to determine the key of a song and its chords by ear, has mastered dynamics and techniques such as vibrato, slides, hammer on's, hammer off's, etc.

Details
My pricing model is based on my hourly rate. I offer 30 minute and 45 minute lessons (pro-rated based on the hourly rate), however I strongly encourage students to book their lessons on an hourly basis. An hour provides enough time to break the ice, recap the prior lesson, and dive into learning, building, and expanding on crucial concepts. Pricing is as follows:
