About Sierra

Though I'm a recent highschool graduate, I have many qualities that I hope will make me the perfect tutor for your children. When working with kids, I do my best to remember to speak to them as equals, the same I would my peers. This helps children feel safe, connected, and accepted and also helps me find out more about them, which may help me figure out which learning style is easiest for them.

I love working with children and even more I love when I begin to see things "click". I constantly am trying to find unique ways to help explain concepts, as my own younger brother struggles with many traditional teaching methods due to his ADHD. I myself am ADHD and I would be thrilled to work with kids both with ADHD and without. I can't wait for the opportunity to help your child thrive.

While I have no professional training or experience, I have always tried to help others fully understand mathematical concepts when I could, rather than leading them to only follow a step by step equation. While I've helped my peers for years, the first time I believe I tutored outside of my own classes was for my neighbors a few years ago. I taught three different children, grades 2-5 basic algebra, and I even taught the oldest some of my Sophomore Highschool level math!

Though I don't have any specialized training or official higher education, I've always excelled in basic Algebra, and I've been successful many times helping both my peers and younger students grasp concepts that they previously didn't understand.

I like to start with a new student by getting to know their personality, likes, dislikes, and what they're struggling with. By doing this I get to bond with them and also get a small window into how they think.

I have worked with students my own age and younger, students who have excelled, and students who have greatly struggled. I've worked with neurotypical and ADHD students. For example, my most recent student I've been helping, my own brother, is in fourth grade, largely struggles with school due to ADHD, and is usually a hands-on or visual learner.

I would advise looking for a tutor who will work based on you and your learning methods, rather than one who works through their own teaching methods.

Just a couple days ago younger brother was struggling for hours with his virtual teacher while trying to add and subtract fractions. So we got a pizza box and made our own fractions "counter". I got to watch as he went from frustrated, overwhelmed, and defeated to flying through the problems within a few minutes. The lessons he had spent hours on he got done in a few minutes, with 100% on all of them!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How do you learn best? Are you struggling  because you don't know how to do the problem, or because you don't know what they're asking for?

I understand that tutoring can be incredibly expensive, and for some, there are very few options. Because of this and also my lack of official, professional experience, I'm willing to negotiate pricing based on each individual and what they are able to afford.
