About Jake
I have experience tutoring math (up through Linear Algebra), science (including AP Chem and AP Physics), Spanish (fluent speaker), computer science, and test prep.
I have a Bachelors in Physics from Carleton College and a M.S. in Energy Systems from UC Davis. I have experience as a classroom teacher and have worked with students from middle school through undergrad.
Every student is unique. Right now, it's such a challenging time to be learning, and every student deserves extra help. I work hard to find creative, thoughtful ways to connect with students remotely, make them feel supported, and help them build confidence.
I enjoy tutoring because it makes it possible to really teach a student a skill. If a student has a different learning style, we can try a different tactic. It's rewarding to see a student build a skill and become more confident.
2 years as a graduate student researcher at UC Davis. Experience tutoring middle and high school students at Clever Minds Tutoring in Truckee, CA. Experience as a ski instructor at Alpine Meadows for kids ages 5 - 15. Experience teaching middle school Chemistry at Breakthrough Twin Cities in St. Paul, MN. We will typically spend the first session discussing goals and making a plan for the tools and technology that will work best for remote tutoring for the subject in question. We will discuss learning styles and then I will assess what skills need to be worked on first.
