About Alexandra
I am deeply passionate about education as a student myself. I have been privately tutoring PreK-6th graders for nearly 10 years. Along the way, I was trained as a Kumon Early Learners Instructor and worked at Kumon of Franklin for 6 years. After leaving Kumon, I was trained as a graduate writing consultant at Vanderbilt Writing Studio during my second and final year of graduate school there. I am currently working on my second master's degree.
I have extensive experience with academic writing through the graduate school level. Though I have primarily worked with young children, I consulted with a number of students at Vanderbilt applying to graduate programs and am confident in my ability to help students applying to both college and graduate programs. As a graduate student at Vanderbilt, I also had the opportunity to be a teaching assistant for a professor at Belmont University as a part of a yearlong field education course. I gained more experience teaching, working with students, editing and grading work, and creating new assignments.
I take my work as a tutor seriously but believe that learning is something to be truly enjoyed. Education sparks curiosity and learners of all ages should have the opportunity to find joy in discovering new things about the world and about themselves as they learn and grow!
I learn so much from the students I work with and find a great deal of joy in working in education. My favorite moment in a tutoring session is when I can see the "lightbulb moment" - the instant the student suddenly understands what they have been trying to learn.
Tutoring is all about building confidence, leaning into curiosity, and finding what helps you learn best! Everyone is different, you just need the time and space to get to where you want to be.

If the student is younger, I prefer that the first session be more casual. Children take time to open up to new people and I want them to feel at ease with me. I take time to speak with parents about how the child is doing, what their interests are, and why they have sought out a tutor. I then request one-on-one time with the student and discuss with them what we'll plan to do, what their goals are, and how we can work together to get them feeling more comfortable and confident with their school work!
I'm usually inclined to meet at libraries when tutoring younger children. Although this is not always the case, I have found that they work better and are less distracted if they are not at home and are away from their toys or siblings. Of course, this is not always the best option and can discuss meeting elsewhere if need be.
For older students, I am happy to meet them where it is most convenient. In the past, I have met older students at libraries or coffee shops to do work.
I have mostly worked with children ages 3-16, though I have a fairly significant amount of experience with college and graduate students, as well.
Find a teacher you are comfortable with who also challenges you! Learning can be an incredible experience, but it is critical that you find a teacher/tutor who can be supportive but also encourage you to grow and challenge yourself as a student.
