About Savannah
I offer flexible and affordable English tutoring for all ages. I have knowledge of both the technical side of English as well as the experience of learning a new language at a later age. I have a long history of loving reading and writing and have been tutoring in this subject for five years. I created and ran a weekly writing lab in my high school, serving as president of National English Honor Society, and have been awarded scholarships in college due to my writing skills. I work with the students to not only teach at them but to teach with them, and strive to inspire them to better their literacy for themselves.
Growing up, I was an avid creative writer and book-worm. Reading nonstop as a child taught me many morals and lessons that have shaped me into the adult I am today. My ability to write has also opened up many opportunities for me. I understand the importance of literacy and the difficulties there can be to achieving it. I aim to close the gap and help people reach whatever goals they may have, if that is getting exposure to English as second language, practice with reading, or understanding the mechanics of good writing. I love to teach and uplift people. I believe that literacy is empowerement and it is something that nobody can take away from you, a powerful tool in our modern world.
I have had a passion for teaching since I was in middle school, where I would give long class presentations and help out my fellow peers. Before I came to college, I often envisioned myself as teaching English to high school children. After I finish my undergraduate degree, I aim to teach English as a second language in Japan before going to graduate school. I love teaching and know that I will (most likely) ultimately end up teaching high school or college students.
I am a student at UNC Charlotte, working on both an Anthropology degree and a Japanese degree, as well as an International Studies minor. These are all writing intensive programs and I have a long history of passion for writing and reading. I have maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout my two years of university and have been awarded scholarships for my writing. While in high school, I was president of the National English Honor Society and created a weekly writing lab for students in the school. I also worked with the neighboring elementary school to help children who weren't up to the expected reading level.
In high school, I learned Latin and am currently learning Japanese. I also take courses in Linguistics, so I understand how to teach English (my native language) as a second language.

I want to get to know my student first, to best understand how they learn and how long it will take them to pick up on things. Every student will learn differently and it is the teacher's responsibility to work with that student to create a program where they will learn best.
After getting to know the student and how they prefer to learn (say, they may be more interactive or they may prefer the more technical side of things), I set to creating goals that the student can work towards. Goals are essential because they set up a way that the student can see their progress and keeps them motivated to push through the sticky situations. If the student is young, I can also work with the parents to set up a reward system that can benefit the student.
Once these goals are acheived and the student has reached their standards, it is all about maintenance and motivation. When goals are accomplished, it is often easy to fall back into old habits and lapse on progress. Aside from just reaching the goals, I aim to inspire my students to see their education and literacy in a positive light and as a worthwhile skill to strive for, whether or not anyone else is pushing them.
I have worked with high school students, particularly in essay, creative, and scholarship writing. I have also worked with elementary students, from K-4th grade, on their reading comprehsion, spelling, and basic writing skills.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I encourage my students to at least have a general gist of what they need help with. Having materials that you are confused about, certain books you need to be able to read, or short writing samples to show where you are at are helpful but they are not necessary. If you know how you learn best that is great for me to know, but if you are not sure then we can always work together to figure it out.

My pricing system works largely around distance needed to travel and the financial situation of the family that I am working with. My standard rate is 30$-35)$ (35$ if I have to travel more that twenty minutes) an hour. Many tutors are teachers themselves and have degrees, making their lesson pricing much higher. I want to be able to offer affordable help to those who need it. If those rates are still too high, don't be discouraged-- there may be something that we can work out if you still need the tutoring help.
