About Daisy

**BEST OF this website 2020**

I am so passionate about sharing the joy of language, literature, and reading, especially with kids, and I would love to help your teen or child succeed and find joy in their learning.

I graduated with a 4.0 GPA from an IB high school, where I received top testing scores in English Literature and academic writing. I got a 35 on the ACT, with a 36 on the English section. I am currently a senior in college, pursuing a theatre directing degree and a part of the honors program. I have volunteered at theatre camps for elementary school kids, helping them write and act in their own plays. I am an energetic and playful person, so I am really good at meeting kids on their own level and helping them feel empowered in their learning rather than feeling talked down to.

I also have and manage severe ADD, and while I do not have training helping others manage theirs, I have found that I am particularly good at working with people who struggle with ADD/ADHD simply because a lifetime of experience makes me know how our brains work and how to harness the neurological differences for our benefit.

What I love about working with kids and my peers are helping them find joy, playfulness, creativity, and excitement in a task that previously felt like a chore. When someone has their intelligence and ideas respected by a teacher, they light up in a totally unique way.

I started teaching when I was fifteen and interned at a summer theatre camp for elementary school students. I found myself delighted by the intelligence and creativity of the children, and have found joy in tutoring English ever since.

A degree in Theatre Directing has helped me so much in developing my skills in English, literature, philosophy, writing, and teaching. Directing a play involves reading and analyzing literature, translating those ideas into actions, visuals, and sound, and managing a large group of highly creative people to ensure that a single and clear idea is communicated to the audience. This requires having a broad range of liberal arts knowledge, the ability to learn new subjects quickly, and to communicate this information in a clear and engaging way.

I first like to know what the student's goals for their education are, and then help them come up with SMART goals for the session and for the week.

I then ask the student about how they learn best, what methods of feedback they find helpful, what interests them, what helps them stay focused, and where they find the problems are in the subject or in school. Especially with schools and schedules being upended, and with the world being very stressful right now, it is especially important to help students figure out the things that work for them and the things that don't.

I also like to figure out a break schedule for the student before beginning work. I like to work in the Pomodoro technique, especially when the tasks are small or the student is unwilling, meaning 25 minutes of work and 5 minutes of break. This is especially helpful for students who struggle with attention and interest since it instills a sense of urgency and gives a tangible reward in a short period. If the student finds a different schedule to work better for them, I am happy to work with them!

I have worked with a really broad range of students, from other college students, high schoolers, younger kids, and I have even participated in the Syrian Refugee Assistance Network, teaching English to adults.

Being good at literature, philosophy, and academic writing comes from the knowledge that your ideas are valuable and worth hearing. The more you come into the session knowing what you have to offer and what makes your perspective unique, the better quality the work will be, and the more enjoyment you will get out of it.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1.) What things interest you?

2.) What makes you excited?

3.) What makes you feel frustrated or bored in class?

4.) What do you struggle with?

5.) What helps you learn?
