About Isabella

My model works like this: I learn how you learn best, and then I help you learn better. It's a team effort to help you build sustainable study skills that will promote your success beyond a single lesson or subject.

Verbal learner? Let's talk it out. More visual? Break out the pen and paper. Need to feel out your style? We've got time for that, too.

With a dual degree in Psychology and Anthropology from the University of Iowa, I'm well versed in figuring out how best to help people understand what works best for them and how to set themselves up for success.

Through a combination of experiences as an independent tutor, workshop facilitator and course assistant at the University of Iowa, I've worked with students and peers to develop effective lessons focused around English, writing, psychology, Spanish language, anthropology, anatomy and more.

I also have four years experience in writing winning application essays for highly competitive scholarships and grants, including the national Fulbright Grant program which sends a select few people abroad each year.

I look forward to learning about, and with, you!

I love seeing how students apply their study skills in new and creative ways! Oftentimes, I'm learning from a client just as they are learning from me.

I got started in the education sphere because all too often, the educational system isn't set up to meet a diverse set of student needs. I saw how I could help fill the gap by working with students one-on-one to ensure that they were able to keep up in one-size-fits-all classes, understand the content in a way which was personally meaningful to them and build foundational study tools which help them succeed in the future.

I am a 2020-2021 Fulbright Scholar and have a BA in Anthropology, BS in Psychology and minor in Spanish from the University of Iowa. On top of this, I've worked as a course assistant, independent tutor, peer educator, programming intern and workshop facilitator, aiding hundreds of students in better understanding their learning style and providing them with the study tools they need to sustainably succeed beyond a single lesson.

I take about 10-20 minutes during the first session starts to check in with you about past experiences where you've felt particularly supported or unsupported in your study. We talk through what methods may work best for you (verbal, visual, etc.) so I can tailor my methods to fit your needs. I also set a standard that if at any point in time you feel a need to switch methods or change something, you can let me know at any time and I will accomodate you.

At the end of every session, we check in for about 5 minutes about how you're feeling, next steps and what worked/didn't work in order to see what can be changed for our next meeting.

I've worked with students in middle school, high school and college. My experiences with younger students are in the realms of academic essay editing, study tools and writing review. My background in assisting college students includes these areas, as well as test preparation, course introductions and topic-specific comprehension.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What role do you want your tutor to play in your academic experience (sounding-board, hands-on review, etc.)?

What kind of work am I willing to put into my academic efforts outside of my tutoring sessions? How can I apply the tips and tricks offered to me by my tutor?

How do I learn best? Visually? Verbally? Another way?

What is a time when I've felt very supported academically? Why?

What is a time I could have used more support? Why?
