About JS
I love writing and I love tutoring writing! No matter where you are on your writing journey, whether you love writing, hate it, or feel "meh" about it, I would love to meet you and to help you become a better writer so that you can reach your dreams.
I am a former college composition, literature, and creative writing teacher (Colorado State University 2006-2014) who has also worked as a professional writer and editor in the both the tech and literary worlds.
I have a BA in English Literature (Arizona State University 2005), an MFA in fiction (Colorado State University 2005), and I’m a certified Story Grid editor, specializing in development editing for fiction (2020).
How will I help you to become a better writer?
I will listen to you as a person and a writer. I will care about you. Together, we'll move you to a crystal clear understanding of the genre, context, purpose, and audience for your writing project.
With this transformational understanding, you can spend less time figuring out what exactly your instructors, employers, college application committee members, or any other audience wants you to write; and you can, instead, write more confidently, efficiently, and successfully.
If you are struggling with research, content, structure, syntax, grammar, punctuation, citations, or any other issues, I can help you figure out why you're struggling and give you specific, actionable advice on how to fix those issues.
I love helping my clients discover a writing voice that meets audience expectations but that is also *authentically yours.* I also love helping my clients discover the topics that light them up with joy so that researching and writing are no longer chores but energizing activities that pull you onward, helping you get to the next adventure and the next.

J is an amazing educator who broke learning down into a fun and methodic process. She made academic writing accessible and she was very kind and attentive in her approach to my specific needs as a student.

I enjoy the direct & specific feedback I get with regard to BOTH the craft of writing, how to put phrases together, use dialogue well, set scenes to illustrate a point along with the guidance in learning to use grammar well.
