About Mark

I am an English teacher. I am an English teacher because I experienced firsthand the advantage of having strong writing and speaking skills. I understand the importance of having great English language skills and I have personally benefitted from them greatly. I seek only to help those who want to be able to think, speak, write, and communicate clearly. If that is for the purpose of getting better grades in school, getting into college, or just becoming a better writer, then I am equipped and motivated to offer the one-on-one help that my client requires.

My mom always told me "the greatest sin on Earth is wasted potential." I enjoy getting the most out of students. I sometimes say I am in the business of elimiating potential because we should strive to have no potential left - only the product of our effort. If we can get everything we can out of our potential, then we have succeeded.

I went to college with the sole intention of being a lawyer. I majored in political science and philosophy so I could set myself up for success on the LSAT and get into a good law school.. As I took more courses and interned at a law firm in Gainesville, I realized my enthusiasm for my studies lied in the process of learning itself, not in the prospect of being an attorney. It was already too late in my degrees to switch to become an education major so I applied to Teach for America and earned my temporary teaching certificate in the state of Florida. I completed my Teach for America commitment and have remained an English teacher at my school and am currently in my fourth year, enjoying it more and more each day.

I am a graduate of the University of Florida. I have degrees in Political Science and Philosophy. Though I do not have an English degree, my education was earned through English language skills. I ended my college career with 3.94 GPA and graduated Magna Cum Laude in Philosophy and Cum Laude in Political Science. I was selected by a former professor to be a Writing TA for her class my final semester, which involved editing, reviewing, and giving feedback to undergraduate students in the philosophy department.

I graduated and began my career as teacher in 2017. I am currently teaching my fourth year in Duval County as an ELA teacher. I have only been evaluated as an Effective or Highly Effective Teacher and last year I became my school's ELA/Reading Department Lead. I am currently teaching virtually and have enjoyed learning how to adapt English instruction to the virtual environment and am confident I can tutor students remotely.

I would say my biggest strength as a student and as a teacher is essay writing, but I am confident I can help students ranging from middle school to college with a variety of English skills.

I am just looking for students who are in need of assistance improving their writing skills, editing writing, doing better in their English classes, or just generally improvig their English skills. If a student reaches out to me, I will respond and ask some questions to ensure that I would be able to help them. If so, we can coordinate information and prices and begin tutoring on schedule that works well for both of us.

My first students were undergraduate college students. I worked as Writing TA and read, reviewed, and gave feedback to students seeking help on their class essays.

I joined Teach for America and was a summer school teacher in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I taught incoming highschool freshman.

For more than three years now, I have been teaching in Duval County as a middle school ELA teacher. I have taught the full range of students including gifted, remedial, ESOL, ESE, and advanced students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. I currently teach 7th and 8th grade advanced language arts.

Communicate as much as you can beforehand. I seek to communicate and ensure that my potential student and I are a good fit. I am not in the business of wasting anyone's time or money and I highly encourage students to avoid any tutors who will not take the time to at least converse with you before beginning formal tutoring.

I was married last November! I've been with my now wife for almost 10 years, and we were finally married a year ago. I can't think of anything I am more fond of.

As far as teacher-specific events, I recently taught a lesson concerning Greek mythology. One of my students, as I found out, is especially enthusiastic about mythology and had a lot to share about some lesser known gods and goddessess and I was very happy to giver her the opportunity to teach her fellow classmates. I am always fond of moments where a learner becomes a teacher.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about the following:

- Why am I doing this? Are you hoping to bring up your English grade in class, are you hoping to find sound feedback on a piece of writing, are you trying to write an essay to get into college? Whatever it is, know your exact purpose for seeking tutoring.

- How do I want to learn? Are you seeking routine and structured learning multiple times a week, or do you just want someone to provide feedback for you here and there as you work independently?

If you can tell me why you are seeking tutoring and how you want to go about it, we can come to a decision on what sort of tutoring plan we need to establish.
