About Perry
Hello! My name is Perry, and I'm a Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature Major at the University of Minnesota. I'm an avid reader and writer, so I'd be honored to help you with reading comprehension, literary analysis, argumentative essays, personal narratives, fiction, and any other writing. I've been a tutor for 3 years, and I'm hoping this platform will help students find me easily. In the past, I've made the Dean's list at the University of Minnesota, lettered in academic achievement in highschool, and was labeled an AP Scholar with Distinction after taking my AP exams in highschool.

I got started teaching many years ago, as I've always enjoyed helping folks learn. However, my "official" introduction to tutoring was by one of my professors. After my professor suggested I become a teacher, they directed me towards the Academic Success Center at the college and I began tutoring for my peers.
I'm currently studying Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature at the University of Minnesota. I've tutored my peers in English Literature for 3+ years, but I've always had a passion for teaching. My teaching methodology varies from student-to-student, because I recognize that different educational methods work better for different people.

I typically start by asking the student what they need help with.
If they want help with a specific project/essay/etc., then we'll go over the assignment guidelines together and discuss what they're struggling with and/or want to focus on. For instance, say a student is having difficulties with the Claim-Evidence-Reasoning structure of an argumentative essay; what I would do to help them is 1) define each piece of this writing structure & work with them to distinguish between them; 2) brainstorm topic/argument ideas for their essay; 3) start the process of gathering evidence; 4) develop a rough outline for their essay; 5) help them begin the writing process; 6) making suggestions/edits after they complete a rough draft; 7) engaging in another round of edits if desired; 8) summarizing the concepts we discussed in our tutoring session(s) in a document that is sent to the student for future reference.
If a student wants help with a subject in a more general sense, I will start by asking what they've been struggling with and/or what assignments they're currently working on. From there, I will develop a lesson plan that's tailored to the student's needs. For instance, if a student is struggling with literary comprehension, I will work with them to define and identify literary terms, read excerpts from literature and annotate them together, and go over portions of their assigned readings together. After every tutoring session, I will send the student a document summarizing what we covered during our time, including a list of concepts to review, and-- if desired-- a brief homework assignment to complete before our next session.
I've worked with students of all ages, including K-12 students, college students, and adult learners of all ages.
The advice I would give a student looking to hire a teacher in my area of expertise is to set expectations. A teacher is there to help you learn, not do the work for you. Therefore, you need to be willing to push yourself in tutoring sessions instead of expecting that the tutor will complete the work for you.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Before talking to teachers about their needs, students should try to pinpoint what they're struggling with. If a student is having difficulty determining what they're struggling with, then it's important that they bring homework/an assignment/etc. to show the teacher so that we can look it over and start from there.

I hired Perry to help my 8th grader with essay-writing, and we thought she was spectacular! My child was fairly behind in class before we started looking for tutors, but Perry helped her get back on track.
Perry helped me edit my college essays in Fall 2021. I had been so worried about my essays that I asked Perry for help, because I knew she'd helped my sister with essays in the past. She helped make writing college essays seem less daunting. Thanks for the help, I really appreciated it!
