About Serena
I am passionate about teaching. It is the thing that gets me out of bed in the morning and motivates me to learn. I am thorough in my approach because I believe that teaching only happens when something is learned.
I enjoy those "aha!" moments when understanding follows explanation, discovery connects with expected outcomes, and joy replaces discouragement. When my students reach a level of confidence that the once perplexing task is now done repeatedly with ease, is absolutely thrilling for me and encapsulates the goal of my tutoring.
My love for teaching began as a child. I "lectured" the plants and flowers in my mother's garden. In high school, I began teaching catechism to students who attended my school but who were not of the Catholic faith. When I went to college, tutoring in my spare time was a side job that helped pay my rent. Upon graduation from Michigan State University with Bachelor degrees in Physiology and Nursing, I got married and started a family, this is when my teaching career truly took off as I opted to stay at home and educate my children, rather than work in the health industry.
I have home schooled for the past 25 years and I have taught EFL in Guatemala and Mexico and ESL in the United States to immigrants and refugees. My workshop on Teaching Children to Read was conducted at the preschool and elementary school level in Mpumalanga, South Africa in 2018.

Initially I assess for areas of weakness and learning gaps. After my assessment, I create a learning plan that encompasses a plan for strengthening these areas and for accomplishing my client's objectives.
In addition to my own children whom I taught from K-12, I have worked with refugees and immigrants here in the US. In Latin America and South Africa, I taught English, Phonics and Reading to adults and children.
A few years ago, I had the profound privilege of spending 2 weeks in Juarez, Mexico. It was a construction trip and though I cannot wield a hammer, I participated in helping to build a house for a couple and their two sons. They were the first family in their neighborhood to live in a finished house. We furnished it with beds, a refrigerator, and a stove. One of the highlights for me was the joy on the wife's face, when I took her to the grocery store and told her how much money she had to spend on food to fill their cabinets and refrigerator! This was an unforgettable experience.

Details
My first session is free, as this is a time for me to assess the student, determine strengths and weakness and create a learning plan that can be mutually agreed upon. Subsequent sessions are billed at a rate of $20/hour, which includes feedback on student performance and expectations for the next lesson.
