About Karlye
My name is KB, and I'm excited to begin my formal tutoring journey with you all. I graduated from Samford University in 2015 with a Bachelor's in Sociology where I received academic awards all four years, maintained a Dean's List placement all four years, and graduated Summa Cum Laude. I have worked as a paralegal for the past 7 years while also providing informal tutoring to children, teens, and adults in my free time. I am currently wrapping up my Master's in Applied Linguistics with a focus in Second Language Acquistion and Teaching English as a Second Language, so I am ready to begin my formal teaching experience. I'm Because of my background in applied linguistics, I am uniquely qualified to help you understand the English language. I have advanced knowledge of how the English language works as well as how to best execute assignments in English classes. My knowledge consists of a range of topics, all on a Master's level of understanding. These topics include English grammar (phonology/phonetics, morphology, and syntax), semantics, and pragmatics. My Master's program is also one designed to train language teachers, specifically English language teachers. Therefore, I have been trained in classroom and language pedagogy as well. I am more than happy to provide an academic transcript outlining the classes I have completed as well as a portfolio with lesson plans that I have designed and used. I am trained to teach any age or grade level, from pre-K to adult learners. I am also trained to teach native English speakers or English language learners. My approach is one of patience, empathy, and compassion. I also approach English tutoring from a place of excitement. I firmly believe that language learning can be meaningful and engaging with the right tools and outlook.
I absolutely love seeing my students grow and tick off achievement goals as they go along. Seeing them become more and more excited and relieved as they are finally understanding a topic is so rewarding.
I have always been that student that others come to for help and advice (I didn't get voted "Most Likely to Succeed" in high school for nothing). After graduating from my university, I took some time to get better acquainted with my passions and desired outcomes in life. I soon realized that I have a very warm passion for teaching and helping others grow in their learning journeys.
I worked as a peer tutor during my undergraduate degree. I have tutored dozens of kids, teens, and adults in an informal setting during my Master's degree. I am wrapping up my Master's degree in Applied Linguistics (linguistics = study of lamguage; applied = real-world application of the study of language). My Master's program emphasizes teaching English, so I have advanced knowledge of English, including but not limited to syntax, morphology, phonology/phonetics, semantics, and pragmatics.

I first begin with an informal interview during which I discuss with the student what their personal goals are for our time together. I ask about issues they are struggling with, what their learning style is, and what they ultimately want to see come from their time with me. This initial interview is free. I do not want to waste your time if the chemistry is off or if you're not comfortable with my approach. If you decide you'd like to move forward, then we will sit down and come up with a learning outcomes plan. It resembles a curriculum, but it is formatted in a way that is student-centered and prioritizes what they need and want from the tutoring. I will then develop a curriculum to support the student's learning outcomes plan. Each session will be a bit different depending on what is being worked on that session. I do not think "busy work" or boring, redundant exercises are beneficial or helpful. I will gladly assist in the understanding of any school work; however, I will not create any supplemental material that uses rote memorization or mindless completion. We will discuss how and why an element functions the way it does, how it is used in everyday interaction, and how it is used academically (if necessary). We will then go through authentic, naturally-occurring scenarios that help solidify the student's understanding.
I have provided structured learning for students ranging in age from 4 years old to 50 years old. I have provided lessons for native English speakers who need help with grammar or writing, and I have also provided instruction for non-native English speakers who need help learning the language from step 1. I happily welcome all learners regardless of age, race, income, religion, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, citizenship status, or ability.
Always ask for a compatibility meeting beforehand. Don't be afraid to question your potential teacher. After all, you are the one hiring us!! Make sure they can meet your needs in ways with which you are comfortable. Make sure they take your learning journey seriously rather than viewing you as just another income source.
I recently got engaged which is very exciting. I am quite fond of that event.

Consultations are always free. These are informal sit-downs with potential clients to determine if we will be successful in a partnership. I want to make sure you are in the best position possible to achieve the outcomes you desire, so assessing professional compatibility is an absolute must. After the consultation, prices will be cooperatively determined. I have a standard range of anywhere from $15-50/hour depending on your needs and what needs to be done on my end to help you meet your goals. That being said, I am more than willing to discuss price points with you if you are concerned. If you can provide some documentation attesting to financial hardship, I am glad to discuss reduced prices and payment plans.
