About Andrea
I received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at Florida International University along with a certificate in Professional and Public Writing and minors in English and international relations. While pursuing my degree, I worked at the FIU Center for Excellence in Writing. I then went on to complete my Master of Science in Education, majoring in higher education, at the University of Pennsylvania, doing research with Write4Change, a writing platform that encourages students from around the world to engage with each other's creative and thesis-driven pieces. Additionally, I started working on a literature review on the future of distance learning in higher education (particularly relevant today) as part of an independent study.
As a freelance writer, I have worked with education consulting firms, walking students through top-10 college applications (including the essay component), academic research, and creative writing. In addition, I have led a volunteer creative writing workshop at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County for over a year. Before the pandemic hit, I was running for Broward County Commission on the premise of reforming the education system outside of the classroom (promoting emotional intelligence through creative writing workshops and the like). On the same token, I am working on a nonprofit, Stand Up Life, with a former NFL linebacker, as we create change by turning children into well-prepared adults through EQ initiatives. I currently sit on two Boards of Directors, helping with their content. Although my freelance writing ranges from tutoring to marketing communications (ebooks, blog posts, newsletters, to name a few), my greatest fulfillment comes from the smile on a kid's face after finishing an essay they did not believe themselves capable of writing.
Writing has always been an integral part of my life; growing up, I would write poems and short stories to help me cope with everyday stress. This is the philosophy that I use when I tutor, as I am a firm believer that many children might benefit from being exposed to writing as more than just an academic activity. Education doesn't just happen inside the classroom, and having fun with writing will pave the way to prose worth reading.
