About Marcie
I live just northeast of O'Fallon (closer to O'Fallon than Lebanon, though I have a Lebanon address) and teach in my home and in Edwardsville at SIUE.
I'm a passionate, committed educator and performer who frequently attends music education and flute conferences to stay on top of new repertoire, curricula, techniques, software, and teaching styles.
I'm devoted to developing accuracy in rhythm and pitch, purity in tone, fantastic breath-support, dynamic posture, and excellent music-reading ability.
I provide a safe, nurturing, yet challenging space for a student to grow into musical maturity.

The flute can be a difficult instrument to learn, and part of being a good teacher is being a good troubleshooter. I'm great at analyzing and isolating problems and finding solutions to improve playing.
I'm also the mama of 8 children. I enjoy children. I enjoy adults. And I look forward to spending time with each one of my students during lessons each week.
I started a family young and didn't start teaching until my own children were band age. I started helping them with their instruments, and the next thing you know, I suddenly had more students coming in my front door for lessons!
I studied flute performance in college and took every pedagogy course I could so that I could one day be a great teacher. Continuing education is part of my life and every year I attend conferences through MTNA and NFA to improve my teaching and my performing.

I usually give new students a complimentary consultation that lasts about 20 minutes to see what level they are playing at and if we would be a good fit for each other. If the students have a musical background, they can play a piece for me. If they are brand new to the instrument, we can spend a few minutes working on fundamentals-how to assemble the flute, how to make a sound on the headjoint, how to play an easy song...
I teach students as young as age 4 or 5 (yes! they do make flutes that small!), and I teach senior citizens as well. I enjoy people of all age groups, finding that each stage of life has its own gifts.
Ask lots of questions about a potential instructor's background and continuing education. Find out what opportunities the studio offers-frequent recitals? Masterclasses? Guest artists?
Ask what kind of expectations the teacher has as far as practicing goes, and if there are other assignments, such as listening or theory.
Recently, one of my middle school students won first place in the Flute Society of St. Louis Young Artist Competition. We worked hard at refining an advanced piece and he performed it beautifully.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about their goals-do they want to major in music in college? Do they want to be first chair in band or play in honor band? Are they struggling in last chair and just need extra help? It's good to be clear with your teacher what your needs are so she can help plan the lessons properly. If you're struggling with band music, then some time can be devoted to going over band music. If you have auditions or competitions coming up that you want to be part of, speak up so we can help craft a plan for your success!! We want to see our students succeed in whatever their goals are!

I took lessons from Ms. Marcie when I started band as a 5th grader (I'm in college now). She was really nice person and knew a lot about the flute and music. She always asked questions about my life and really cared about me. She also helped me become a better player. I was really struggling when I first learned the flute, but after a couple of years of lessons, I could play really difficult pieces.
