About Karl
I teach the shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute)
There are not many shakuhachi players in the bay area so when I encountered people who wanted to learn I agreed to teach them.
I was trained by a number of shakuhaci teachers; my main teachers are Kaoru Kakizakai and Riley Lee who both studied with Katsuya Yokoyama in the Dokyoku tradition.

Finding out what interests a student has about playing shakuhachi (e.g. classical religious solo pieces, classical ensemble pieces. folk music) and focus on moving in that direction as well as providing a strong foundation in basic technique.
I have worked with adult students but would be willing to work with any younger students that have an interest in shakuhachi.
Think about what interests you in learning the shakuhachi (e.g. the spiritual aspects, a general interest in Japanese music, playing in groups,...) so you can help the teacher to tailor the lessons to meet your interests.
